Dear Kenston parents,

We are looking forward to the return of Middle School students to campus tomorrow. Please know, Kenston staff and administration has taken numerous steps over the last several days to ensure the transition will be as smooth as possible for students, parents and staff.

As we plan for the move, we are also working to resolve numerous issues which resulted in several of our staff members and students becoming ill last week. I would like to address some of your questions.

1.  Why was the project being done at this time?
The original plan was to have the Middle School roofing project completed by August 11, 2017. Delays were caused by weather, roofing specs and other contract issues. When it became apparent that the August date would not be met, the decision was made to continue the project, with the majority of the roofing work to be completed after school and on weekends.

2.  What chemicals and substances were used on the roofing project?
The materials being used on the roof meet industry standards. Here is a link to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) that contains information about products used and how to work safely with them. The information is also posted on the website.

3. Why was the building reopened on Wednesday, October 4th?
The Bainbridge Fire Department came on Tuesday, October 3rd and conducted air meter reading and detected no odor. The building was cleared on Tuesday afternoon. Continued monitoring of the school was done throughout the rest of the day and into the night of October 3rd and early morning of October 4th. At all times, up to and including the start of school on Wednesday, there was no detection of any odor of any kind. Accordingly, the decision was made to have the students and staff return the building on October 4th.

4.  What is being done to rectify the situation so that Kenston Middle School students and staff will be safe?
We are closing the building while the roofing project is completed. Before anyone returns to the building, extensive air quality testing will be conducted to certify the safety of the Middle School building. This will include testing for chemical particulates as well as black mold. The results of these tests will be posted on the website when completed.

5.  When will the Middle School reopen?
We are meeting with contractors and quality assurance professionals to determine the timeline for the project and will continue to keep you updated. The plan is to complete the project so that we can put an end to the roofing related issues at the Middle School that necessitated the project.

We await reports from Chagrin/Southeast Regional Hazardous Materials Response Team and the independent engineering construction consultant. I will continue to communicate with you and share findings.

Sincerely,

Nancy R. Santilli
