Learning to Sign: American Sign Language

Level 1: Tuesdays, October 11-November 15; 7-9 p.m. 

Level 2: Tuesdays, November 29-January 10; 7-9 p.m. 

If you communicate regularly with people who are severely hard-of-hearing or Deaf, or if you have an interest in learning sign language, these classes are for you. 

 

Ciao Italia! Basic Conversational Italian

Level 1: Mondays, October 17-December  12; 7-9 p.m.

Level 2: Tuesdays, January 3 to February 21; 7-9 p.m.

Immerse yourself in this beautiful, musical language! Explore the wonders of Italy and discover its rich traditions in opera, arts, history, fashion and cuisine. 

 

An Introduction to French

Tuesdays, October 25-December 6; 7-9 p.m.

This course will provide a foundation of French pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, develop basic conversational skills, and acquaint students with French geography and contemporary French culture, in a fun, informal atmosphere.  

 

Basic Conversational Spanish

Thursdays, October 27-November 17; 6-9 p.m. 

Learn the second most spoken language in the United States! This fun, challenging introduction to beginning conversational Spanish covers simple dialogues and phrases perfect for use in many situations. 

 

Digame en Espanol! Spanish for Effective Communication: Educator Series 

Wednesdays, November 2-December 14; 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Join co-workers and other educators to learn the basic Spanish phrases that you need in your profession. The purpose of this class is to provide education professionals with the vocabulary they need to know to communicate with Hispanic students and their parents. You will learn simple ways to give and receive information necessary on a daily basis. The course is an interactive conversational approach to basic communication. It will include useful classroom vocabulary as well as cultural differences as they apply to the educational system.

Grand Opening of... 

KY Cascade CaveKentucky's Cascade Cave

Monday, October 31

Show times at Noon, 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. 

Make us the last stop on your Trick-or-Treat route and take a virtual tour of the Cascade Cave at Carter Caves State Resort Park. Produced at Northern Kentucky University's Haile Digital Planetarium, this show is mostly high resolution photography and includes some computer generated simulations. Over ten thousand photographs shot on location inside Cascade Cave allow this full-dome video to guide you through the cave as if you were walking on the public tour. A great introduction to caves and the planetarium is completely accessible. The show also includes tour of the park and its trails. The show is family friendly and educational.  The first 100 children to view the show will receive a free plush bat. Halloween costumes are welcomed!

  • Leading for High Performance (formerly called Applied Supervision)
 

21st Century Library Career Development Online Courses

Increasingly libraries are expanding the roles and responsibilities for staff in their organizations. NKU's Library Career Development courses will provide individuals seeking occupational advancement as well as initial employment in the library science field with the necessary credentials to be vital members of 21st century libraries.  Cutting edge trends in library technology, new programming initiatives, and best practices overviews will be included in each course.

Join in these discussion-based events in which faculty, students and the community engage in conversation about current topics in the media. By inviting knowledgeable faculty to host these discussions, the hope is to generate lively discussion and to provide participants the opportunity to learn from the faculty and from each other. Upcoming topics include: Kentucky's Governor Race, The Future of Digital Media, Student Philanthropy, Climate Change and the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War.

NKY Forum: Is the Structure of Government in Kenton County Ideal?

As follow-up to our April 2010 dialogue on governance in Kenton County, the Forum will host a panel discussion with audience Q&A about the current structure of local government in Kenton County. Should the structure remain as is or be changed in some fashion? If is should change, what should that change look like? All of our Forums are free and open to the public.

The Presidential Election is one year away but the campaigning is already in full swing. Liz Sidoti, national political editor for the Associated Press, will provide an insider's view of the campaign, including how AP is covering it. What makes news and why during a campaign? How does 2012 look compared to past campaigns? Sidoti will answer these questions and more. 

 

Connecting through Chemistry: Scientific Discoveries and Inspiring the Future

December 8; 6 p.m.

Chemistry research has been vital in meeting many world needs. The complexity of tackling these endeavors often requires an interdisciplinary approach, providing an exciting world of discovery that inspires young researchers and advances exploration.Come and learn about what promising new discoveries in drug delivery there are, how chemistry can help us understand how problematic biofilms form, and how nanotechnology can impact both of these topics.
