What to expect in your final boxes

The advent of winterish weather means a transition into root crops. We have been holding back on providing carrots, beets, turnips, and rutabagas until now. As farmers, we watch the weather more intently than a dog watches its favorite chew toy. When the long term outlook suggested a strong, consistent cold snap this October and November, we made plans to survive til Mid December. Now is the time to begin engaging those plans.  Learn more.

Featured Vegetable
  Mizuna

One of the mildest mustard greens, mizuna is high in immune-boosting vitamin C, folate, and iron. It also contains powerful glucosinolates-antioxidants linked to decreased cancer risk. Cultivated in Japan since ancient times, mizuna brings an exotic, slightly spicy flavor to the table.  Try it mixed in a green salad or in this recipe for Stir-Fried Bok Choy and Mizuna with Tofu

The Dirt on LotFotL's Honey Bees:
Top 5 questions for your Beekeeper
April checking hives!

  1. What is your stand on antibiotics? Conventional beekeeping wisdom advises beekeepers to use prophylactic antibiotic treatments, with the hopes of preventing disease that occurs from weakened immune systems. These drugs build up in wax comb and can eventually cause resistance. Here at LotFotL, we work to build the hive's immunity by feeding biodynamic herbal tea blends in Spring and Fall. We also ask for our share of the honey early in the season, so that the bees have time to build up plenty of stores for Winter. Because of this, we rarely need to feed large amounts of supplemental sugar water like conventional practices require. With a healthy diet, our bees have a higher chance of fighting disease and we have never had to use antibiotics. click here to read more....
