September 15 - October 13

EXHIBITION OPENING: The opening was well attended. Art Sculptures now adorn the back lawn. The Gallery, a mix of reliefs, acrylic paintings and sculptures. The artist, Josef Petriska was on hand to share his visions and inspirations for his art during the creative process. His passion for life and the environment was evident as he described his life work.  From those who have attended the exhibition came the following:

"Thought Provoking", "Awesome Creations", "Where Have You Been?",

"Very Powerful and Thoughtful"

null "In keeping with JCHAC's vision to support community art by exhibiting local artists, JCHAC is pleased to launch Josef Petriska, "Artist, Sculptor and Nature's Voice", says Sybil Rampen. "This exhibition is an opportunity for the community to renew their love and appreciation for such an extraordinary man".

Josef Petriska, a great artist and sculptor, is a national treasure; an octogenarian living at Palermo (a community in Oakville, Ontario) surrounded by his life's work. He is an environmentalist. One of his most notable works is "Struggle for Survival", a bronze sculpture of a bird, dying from an oil  spill. This powerful symbol, endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund, has been featured on the CBC program The Nature of Things with David uzuki.

To local residents a familiar Oakville landmark is the towering Oak Leaf art installation in Oakville Place. Perhaps not so well known is the sculptor responsible for the piece is Josef Petriska.

Josef has exhibited alongside  Karel Appel, Harold Town,

Andrew Wyeth, Etrog Sorel, Robert Bateman, and members of the Group of Seven.

The time has arrived to disperse his collection and share it with the world. This is your  opportunity to own a Josef Petriska sculpture, painting, print or relief. Selected pieces will be for sale during the exhibition. Given the interest in Josef's work make plans to visit the exhibition early and often to experience his visions through art and perchance own an original piece of Josef Petriska art.

Proceeds of sales will be shared with the new Oakville Hospital.

WHAT'S NEW AT JCHAC

JCHAC LEGACY

Sybil RampenWith Sybil's assistance each month we would like to add factoids of Joshua Creek so that we all may have a deeper understanding of it's heritage and evolution into the oasis we enjoy today. "Our intent is to honor the pioneers who once lived here. JCHAC is an oasis, breathing space as the urbanization of  Oakville accelerates."

When Gordon Joyce died, Hugh Calverley from the next door farm came to the auction, and bought the present property of Joshua Creek in 1950. He discovered that banks did not give mortgages for farms but his army friend Leslie Bradley of the General Store at Postville (Dundas and 7th Line) helped him out. Son Michael, back from WW2 and graduated from Guelph in Agriculture began farming both farms. The house had been neglected for many years and Michael and his bride Gwen rebuilt it from the foundation up - and then left for Alberta. Hugh loved the house and felt there was something very special about it and continued with the renovation helped by his neighbours, Gordon Post and Bill Watson. In 1955 Sybil and her new husband Leo Rampen took over the mortgage and have lived here ever since.

FUTURE GALLERY EXHIBITIONS

Gallery We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.

We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt for more information.

TEA TIME AT JOSHUA CREEK

An invitation is extended to interested groups who are considering looking for a spot to gather and enjoy some "tea time" in a welcoming and engaging atmosphere. Of special interest are residents in retirement communities looking for a meaningful and fun outing to this extraordinary land where the city is forgotten and the country feels like coming home.

Please contact Bill Hewitt for more information.

OTHER IMPORTANT NEWS AND UPDATES

THANKSGIVING

British explorer Martin Frobisher is credited with holding the first Canadian Thanksgiving - in Newfoundland - to mark his safe return from an unsuccessful search for the Northwest Passage. But aboriginal groups (both in Canada and the United States) have long traditions  of holding thanksgiving ceremonies to commemorate abundant harvests. Settler groups later copied this custom, beginning in the early 17th century at New France, under Samuel de Champlain. The turkey is thought to have graced Canadian groaning boards after the arrival of United Empire Loyalists from America in the 18th century. The date of the holiday, however, has fluctuated, and was only fixed - as the second Monday in October - in 1957. It's a statutory holiday everywhere, except in Atlantic Canada.
