Had a good time at the golf fitness event on Thursday. I hope those that went make use of the info to help their golf game. Our next fun social event is the Witches Tea which is always a hit. I hope you are getting your partners ready for the league play at Stoneybrook. Enjoy the cooler drier weather and welcome back to our seasonal friends who have returned.

WITCHES TEA

In primitive society, when native tribes beat the ground with clubs and yelled, it was called witchcraft; today, in civilized society, it is called golf. One of our favorite social events! The Witches Tea is a fun opportunity to gather around the cauldron with your favorite witches.  In the "spirit" of Halloween, come dressed in your most festive witch costume for a chance to win fame and fortune. Your registration fee will cover a 3-entree dinner buffet, 2 drink tickets with free entry into the costume contest. Make plans to attend and invite a friend who might have interest in joining the chapter! We will be on the patio (weather permitting) casting spells, and lifting a chalice or two.

Costume contestants will be judged and determined by audience applause in the following categories: The Allison Gross Award (Ugliest Witch in the North Country), best Golf Themed Witch, and The Glenda Award (Good Witch).

leagueupdateLEAGUE PLAY UPDATE

STARTING IN NOVEMBER, WE WILL HAVE TWO LEAGUES

SATURDAY MORNINGS at STONEYBROOK(SHOTGUN START)

THURSDAY AFTERNOONS at HIBISCUS GOLF COURSE

STONEYBROOK INFO:

Brand new team format - play with a set partner

6 weeks November 8 - January 10 (round 1)

You have been asking for a more formal and committed league and we are going to see how it goes. This league requires you to sign up and pay for all 6 weeks(dates will be known in advance) and you can sign up 2 different ways:

Commit to play with 1 partner for all 6 events. Each week your team will play a different team and at the end of the 6 events there will be a team winner. If you do not have a partner, you can sign up as a single player and we will pair you with someone for the entire 6 events.  Once the league begins, if you cannot make a date, you will be responsible for finding a replacement player for yourself. Don't let your teammate down . If you cannot commit to all 6 events but want to be called if someone needs a substitute, we will put your name on a alternate list. Details are being finalized and sign up will be available soon.

WE NEED A COUPLE OF VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS LEAGUE. Since signup and teams will be predetermined and paid for, we are looking for 1 or 2 people that will be able to help keep track of the weekly team rankings and the "go to" person for the pro shop if there are any questions.

Very minimal time required.

Please let me (Sharyl Wicks) know if you would be willing to help out.

For both leagues, everyone will have to sign up and pay in advance on 123signup, no exceptions

NEWS FROM HQ!!!

Status of the Chapter Recruitment Challenge

  • The Challenge:  Every Chapter that gains at least 6 NEW members from September 1 through November 30 will be sent a package of logoed giveaways to share with your members.  That's just 2 each month!
  • The Southwest Florida Chapter is already a winner - they gained 8 new members in September!  Boise/Treasure Valley, ID is almost there too because they gained 4 new members last month!  Los Angeles, CA and Middle Tennessee each gained 3 new members, and 7 other Chapters met the monthly challenge by gaining 2 new members.
  • During September there were 34 Chapters who recruited new members.  Did your Chapter make the list?  Don't miss out on the Challenge!
Getting Older Does Have It's Rewards!

If you are going to be turning 65 within your EWGA Membership (but not necessarily the calendar) year, you can renew at the lower senior rate of $100 when your renewal comes due!  For example, if your membership is due for renewal on October 15th but you will turn 65 on March 20th, you are entitled to the lower renewal rate.  Just call Kate Moore 1-800-407-1477, ext. 10 at EWGA Member Services when you are ready to renew, and she will be happy to help!

Change of Address or Email?  Please make sure you inform us so that we can keep your profile up to date.  Our 123 Signup system is email, not name based, so it's important that you let us know of any changes so you won't have trouble registering for all the great events we have coming up!  Send an email with your changes to Barb Schanmier, Member Services Director.

We are looking for volunteers to help with our very popular "Chapter Buddy" program:  be a link to our Chapter by offering to be available to contact and answer any questions a new member may have.  Many of us joined withour knowing any other members and were "taken in" and helped by more seasoned members.  Now it's your chance to "pay it forward"!  If you are interested or need more information, contact Sue Shaeffer.

BIGGEST LOSER HANDICAP CHALLENGE

Michele's Golf Tips
Do you flub most of your chips?

Some golfers complain that they simply cannot hit chip shots and will putt from off the green no matter what the shot requires.  Poor chipping is almost always the result of making a long backswing.  Once a golfer makes a long backswing to chip, he/she will tend to decelerate into the ball and the result is a chunk shot or skull shot, or simply a weak chip.  To hit solid chips, make a short backswing and accelerate through the ball and strike it crisply.  You do not need to make a fast back and through motion.  Make it smooth but keep it short back and through.
