ACF Partners to Provide Affordable Housing
Wanda Pierce with Nina Janopaul, Barbara Favola, David Clark and Walter Tejada
On September 20th, the Arlington Community Foundation (ACF) joined the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing (APAH) and the County in celebrating a unique public/private partnership to make a lasting contribution toward ending homelessness in Arlington The partnership will provide ten one-bedroom units at Marbella Apartments at very low rents that will house at-risk individuals living in our community.

Through the "Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness", Arlington County adopted the 100 Homes Campaign to provide 100 homes for those who lack adequate shelter using the "Housing First" model. This model recognizes that people can be helped more effectively by quickly getting them in to housing first, then supporting them with various services to help them improve their lives and health. The Leadership Consortium of the "Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness" is co-chaired by Walter Tejada and John Shooshan and was initially co-chaired by Senator Barbara Favola during her service on the County Board. APAH, Arlington's Department of Human Services, A-SPAN and other safety-net non-profits are partners in administering the program.

NextGenNow: Find Your Passion
NGN
On October 1, the new philanthropy group NextGenNow (NGN) hosted a happy hour at A-Town in Ballston to continue spreading the word about their mission and recruit founding members. The happy hour featured Ben Foster, Vice President of Product at  Opower. Ben spoke about Opower and how they are making an impact on the green energy industry by providing customer engagement solutions. He touched on the importance of making a difference by finding your passion and being actively involved in finding solutions. Ben stated that one of the reasons Opower is successful at saving energy is because, "We feel passionately that we have an obligation to go do something to help future generations."

NextGenNow members also feel passionately about doing something now to help future generations, specifically to help those in the Arlington community that are most in need. It's this drive that led NGN's membership to grow to 42 founding members by the end of the happy hour! (Including Ben Foster.) With a strong base of founding members, NGN is planning to vote on their focus area for the year. Once the focus area is decided, NGN will work to raise awareness of the issues surrounding their focus area and address these issues in a variety of ways to make an immediate impact. Stay tuned to find out what NGN is up to next!

Special thanks to our NGN Happy Hour event sponsors
