Embodying Compassion

"The more you listen, the more you will hear.

The more you hear, the more and more deeply

You will understand."

--Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

What keeps us separate from self and others?  What leads us to put up shields or walls to defend ourselves from the deeper experiences of life, including not only pain but also joy?  Yes, we have lost, we have suffered, we have been betrayed, we have been abandoned....but is not the price we pay for closing our hearts even greater than the other pain and loss we feel when our hearts are open to both our own struggles and the struggles of others in this world?

Embodying compassion means finding the internal strength and courage to hold ourselves and others with love and sacred respect, and to create the safety within and without to take down our masks.  When we take down our masks we can see heart to heart, soul to soul.  When we take down our masks we can both see others and be seen for who we truly are.

Force of Nature

"She breezes in, emotional genie.

You can't keep her in a bottle.

She'll touch your soul, even when you're sleeping.

And when you're awake, just let her in.

She's a force of nature.
She's a keeper of the heart.

She's a lighthouse for the weary.

But this world is tearing her apart."

--From "Force of Nature" by Linda Marks

I know I have a lot of energy, whether you call it passion or joie d'vivre.  And I am grateful I have ways to direct it positively to make a difference in the world--be it working with individuals, couples or groups as a mind-body psychotherapist, or as a singer or leader or organizer or human being walking the face of the planet.  When I was a kid, people often told me I was "intense."  I couldn't tell if that was an insult or a compliment.

When the speaker seemed scared or intimidated by me, then I felt it was more of a distancing comment or way to "other" me, separating me from other people.  And that never felt very good. In my adult years, the word "intense" has been replaced by another term, "force of nature."  Once again, it has been a mixed term, maybe an insult from some and a compliment from others.

Music Notes

Music is such a source of great joy, and is a universal language to connect people heart-to-heart.  In the spirit, I am working on recording a new CD"Heart-to-Heart," working with the extraordinarily talented Doug Hammer at his Dreamworld Studio in Lynn, MA.

"Heart-to-Heart,"the show Bonnie MacLeod and I have been working on, is just around the corner!  We will be performing at Amazing Things Arts in Framingham on Sunday, October 5 at 3 pm.  Get your tickets on the Amazing Things website.

Bonnie is my accompanist and collaborator on this show. Lisa Wexler will join me for one of the songs we co-wrote many years ago when we were both twenty somethings.  Miki Matsuki will join us on percussion.  Matt BenDaniel will join us on guitar.  And Geoff Wadsworth will join us on saxophone!

Friends ask where they can see me sing.  Some of the places I sing regularly are listed below.  I guarantee you will have a fun time at all of them!

BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists) Open Mics in Watertown (next one is Wednesday, October 22 at 7 pm at UU Church in Watertown)

TCAN (The Center for the Arts in Natick) Open Mics in Natick (next one is Tuesday, October 28 at 7 pm)

Sunday Jazz Brunch with Bo and Bill Winiker at Skipjack's in Boston.  Bo and Bill, who are two of Boston's finest musicians,  are kind enough to welcome singers to sit in on a song during their wonderful jazz brunch.  They play the 3rd and 4th Sundays of the month from 11 am - 2 pm.

I am also singing at the BACA Fundraiser at Amazing Things Arts Center in Framingham on Sunday, October 19 at 5 pm.  The fabulous Dale Lepage and the Manhattans are our featured entertainers, and I will be doing a duet with Dale during the show.

As I devote more time to music, it is fitting that I am now in the process of building a website devoted to my musical activities, and projects.

What is EKP?
EKP is Emotional-Kinesthetic Psychotherapy, a heart-centered, body-centered psychotherapy method Linda Marks developed and has taught and practiced for nearly twenty years. Working with the heart, touch with permission, the wisdom of the body and the intuitive guidance of the spirit, EKP creates a special sense of intimacy that deeply touches and transforms most all who participate.

Participants can be "client," witness or helper as an individual group member has a "turn" to do deeper heart-centered, body-centered psychospiritual work in the center. Since the electromagnetic field of the heart extends out 10 - 12 feet from our bodies, as we go deeper and open our hearts, we are all touched.

EKP helps restore our capacity as organs of perception. The skin is our largest organ, and a source of soul deep knowing, perception and expression. When our hearts and hands can work as one, we move beyond defenses safely and respectfully and find freedom, connection and expression.

Emotional safety is the foundation of EKP.  When we are emotionally safe, we are more aware of feelings, sensations and deeper thoughts in our bodies and hearts.  You will have a chance to listen to and care for your heart as you help create and hold a safe healing space for everyone's heart.  Experience what we mean when we say that in EKP, "when anyone has a turn, everyone has a turn."

I welcome dialogue and comments on my articles through my blog:  HealingHeartPower.blogspot.com It is user friendly, and even something you can subscribe to.

Linda Marks
