You Must Hear This...

It's notes like this that motivate us to work harder.  You, our supporters, will especially be moved by these words...

"The [Circle of Hope volunteer drivers] just left. Please know that we appreciate all the donations from the jackets to the underwear everything was fantastic. Please thank everyone at Circle of Hope for all that is done for our guests at the Long Island Shelter."

Go To Crew Update

In September we e-mailed a request to our Go To Crew requesting men's jeans for Boston's Long Island Shelter.  They were experiencing an unprecedented increase of overnight guests and needed jeans for them in all sizes.  With the overwhelming response of our Go To Crew, we were able to deliver 200 pairs of jeans.  See a thank you from Long Island Shelter's, John Comaschi, above.  Thank you Go To Crew!

The Go To Crew is a small group of supporters who receive an e-mail if a special need arises.  Being a member of the Go To Crew does not obligate its members to donate every time there is a need.  If you would like to be a member of the Go To Crew, or know someone who would like to be on this e-mail list, just respond to this e-mail, or click here.

Dear Friends of Circle of Hope,

October is Circle of Hope's birthday month and the time we look back on the previous year.  With your support, this past year we donated more than $500,000 worth of clothing and necessities to Boston's homeless and at-risk individuals and families, a 52% increase in our giving over 2013.  Our timing couldn't be better, as local, state, and federal officials reported record numbers of homeless people, especially families and youths (Boston Globe, January 12, 2014).  In 2014 our increase in donation deliveries was the largest ever just when "Massachusetts is facing the biggest homeless crisis we've ever seen" (Jim Greene, director of emergency shelters for the Boston Public Health Commission, Boston Globe, February 25, 2014).

I am proud to report that Circle of Hope provided a warm winter coat for every child in the homeless shelters and motels we serve.  Determined and undaunted by a relentless winter, COH volunteers delivered 1,570 coats to children, women, and men, a more than 50% increase over last year.  We're already getting requests for winter coats and we hope to keep babies, children, and adults warm throughout the fall and winter again this year.

This year we've been able to serve more people.  In addition to serving families in the domestic violence shelters, such as ATASK and Renewal House, we helped individuals cared for by Fenway Health Center's Violence Recovery Program.  In this issue you'll read about our delivery of more than 200 pairs of men's pants to Long Island Shelter in response to an urgent request for help.  In 2014 we also created a program to provide clothing and necessities for teens and their younger siblings living in Boston's Bowdoin Geneva neighborhood who face many challenges.  And, we partnered with Solutions Wear to provide business wear and confidence to individuals struggling for independent lives.

How did we do this?  With more generous supporters, 100% volunteer retention this year, and nearly 20% more volunteers joining our team in 2014 - that's how we grew!

At Circle of Hope we bring dignity and respect with every delivery, along with hope and healing in times of deepest need.  Thank you to all of our generous donors, partners, and volunteers who make it possible for us to keep our promises.

With deepest thanks,

Barbara Waterhouse
Executive Director

And Now We are 6:  What That Means to Us

On October 2, 2008, Circle of Hope received its official  non-profit status to serve Boston's children, women, and men who are homeless.  Since then, we have provided clothing and basic necessities to thousands.  So, October is a month of celebration and reflection for us.  We look back at what we have accomplished and look forward to what is next.

In six short years, we have expanded our partnerships to 19 homeless shelters and organizations with whom we work to provide clothing to the families and individuals who need them.  There are approximately 700 people like you who drop off gently worn clothing and basic necessities to us each week so we can sort them and deliver them to those in need.  Each year, you give more and more and now, we're proud to say that we have delivered $1.7 million of clothing to families and individuals who need our help.  We delivered 50% more donations this year compared to last to Boston's most vulnerable citizens thanks to your outpouring of generosity.

Thank you for your enthusiastic support.
Because of YOU...
Because of people like YOU, Circle of Hope is able to help hundreds of people in Boston area homeless shelters and programs serving refugees and disadvantaged youth.  Here are some of our stories from this month...

Welcome to a New Business Partner!
Second Time Around

Over the summer, the folks at Second Time Around called to say that their metrowest locations in Newton, Wellesley, and Needham were interested in donating clothing to us on an ongoing basis.  We just picked up there for the first time coming away with hundreds of beautiful items that have now been delivered to Boston's women who are working towards independence.  Thank you Second Time Around for joining our mission!

Parties That Give Back
Lisa's September 2014

Parties are such a fun way to spend time with your friends and at the same time, support a cause you care about.  So, the dozens of women who showed up at the September "Girl's Night Out" at Lisa's Boutique were happy to do just that.  Thank you, Lisa's for hosting us, and for your generous donation from the evening's proceeds! Thanks to all who turned out.  That was fun!

Thank you Jenson's Cleaners
Jenson's Cleaners

On September 17  all of the business clothing collected at Jenson's Cleaners on behalf of Circle of Hope was delivered to Year Up who work with 200 disadvantaged young men and women, age 18-24 in their job training program.  And guess who delivered it for us? Paul Leonelli, owner of Jenson's Cleaners, pictured above (center) with Year Up students and volunteers helping unload. And may we also say that the van was COMPLETELY FULL?  Paul, by the way, has offered to help us make deliveries to the organizations and shelters we support on a monthly basis.  We are overwhelmed and grateful to him for his generosity of resources and time.

Thank you, Ben Shaer

Ben Shaer, dropping off sock donations

During our birthday month, it seems especially relevant to share this with you.  Sixth grader Ben Shaer, in lieu of accepting gifts for his recent birthday, asked his friends again this year to bring pairs of new socks to be donated to Circle of Hope instead.  Thank you for your generosity, Ben!
