She's the First provides scholarships to girls in low income countries with the goal of creating first generation graduates and our next generation of global leaders. This fall, She's The First is expecting hundreds of bake sales to happen between October 11-November 1 during their 5th Annual Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off. First,
sign up here to add yourself to the map of people planning to have bake sales at their school, office, club or girl/boy scout troop to raise funds to send girls to school with She's the First. Then, share all over social media to recruit your friends and family. Visit their

TreesCount! 2015
NYC Parks
Date/Time: Ongoing
Location: All around the five boroughs of NYC
New York City street trees make our city cooler, our air cleaner, and our neighborhoods more beautiful. TreesCount! 2015 is New York City's effort to inventory our urban forest, and tree-loving citizens are needed to help collect data. Volunteers will be trained on how to identify and assess street trees, using simple site surveying tools and software to map them block-by-block. Volunteers will receive rewards when they hit certain milestones!

Urban Farm Upkeep

Date/Time: Saturday, October 3, 10am - 1pm and Saturday, October 17, 10am - 1pm
Location: October 3, Mad Fun Farm, 98th Street and Third Avenue, just south of the flagpole in the gated gardens.
October 17, Jefferson Gardens, 300 East 115th Street, just east of Second Avenue. Gardens span from 113-115 between 2nd and 1st Avenues.
Concrete Safaris would like to invite families to join them for their fall Garden Volunteer Dates. Activities may include: planting, harvesting, weeding, raking leaves, spreading wood chips, trimming shrubs, and picking up trash. Dates will be canceled if the temperature is below 35 degrees, if the gardens are full of snow or ice, or if there is a threat of lightning or other natural disasters. Dress to get sweaty, dirty, and get stuff done! Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Events will happen rain or shine. Wear outdoor clothes that you are willing to get dirty.
Ages: Families are welcome; children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Sort with Room to Grow!

Room to Grow is dedicated to enriching the lives of babies born into poverty throughout their critical first three years of development. Volunteers will sort and fold baby clothes, and organize an inventory of infant and toddler clothing, books, toys and equipment that will be given to children living in poverty throughout their first three years of life.
Ages: Volunteers should be 15 or older

Plan ahead for all of that "leftover" Halloween candy! On November 1st, your piles of leftover Halloween candy may be overwhelming. You can let your children to keep a few favorites, and consider donating the rest to a very good cause. Through the Halloween Candy Buy-Back program, local dentists promise to "buy back" left over Halloween candy with prizes, toothbrushes, coupons, etc. You can
search by zip code for participating dental practices. The candy is donated to Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit that sends over 100,000 care packages annually to service members stationed in hostile regions, to their children left behind, and to veterans. Their mission is simple: to put a smile on soldiers' faces and to show the appreciation and support of the American people. If you are shipping your candy please check the
Operation Gratitude website for important packaging and shipping information. Consider asking your children to write a letter or draw a picture to include with your donation, as Operation Gratitude strives to include these personal notes in every care package they send.

Operation Goody Bag was founded right after 9/11 to remember those who were lost, and to express support and appreciation to our military, veterans and first responders who sacrifice so much to keep us safe and free. OGB sends more than 50,000 Goody Bags each year to troops and first responders. Each Goody Bag is filled with candy treats, personal letters and printed messages of thanks. Operation Goody Bag sponsors goody bag creation events in the region, collects tootsie pops, and sponsors "thank you note" and "goody bag coloring" projects. Tootsie Pops are the only candy OGB collects. If you live in the NY area, consider holding a Tootsie Pop collection this Halloween! OGB only accepts full/unopened bags and boxes of pops.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every family has been touched by cancer in some way, and many have been touched by breast cancer. You can teach your kids about the importance of fundraising for cures and support programs, and enjoy a fun, celebratory day of walking in the park.

Donate Used Halloween Costumes

Developed in 2008 by then 11-year-old Emma Rose Shapiro, the mission of The Halloween Helpers is to collect previously enjoyed, gently used Halloween costumes and donate them to children in need. Emma's goal was to enlist children who outgrow or become disinterested in their previous years' costumes and share them with kids in their own community who would not typically receive costumes. Through this one simple effort, Emma's ultimate objective is to provide children with life-long memories, develop self-worth, and "level the playing field" among all children. You can help by holding a costume drive at your school, business, camp, scout troop, religious group, special event or organization; distribute and/or retrieving costume collection boxes; sorting and labeling costumes; or helping out at costume distribution events. Clean Up Your Neighborhood

Location: Pick a location to clean up in your community
Fall winds are sending wayward wrappers flying out of open car doors and fluttering school papers out of our hands. In spring, everyone is in the mood for neighborhood clean up, but by October, the Earth Day influence seems to have worn off. Recommit to cleaning up during your fall walks. Clear out litter from a section of park, beach, vacant lot or your own neighborhood. Take all necessary precautions, including wearing sturdy gloves, being careful on riverbanks or near roads, having adults handle dangerous items and supervising children closely. You can pick your favorite walk and do a one-time sweep, or make clean up a regular family event. Take a few digital photos of what you've picked up. Then have your family send an essay about your experience along with your favorite photo, your names, age(s) and address to [email protected]. Your essay will be published on the
Nicodemus Wilderness Project website, your children's names will appear in the Registry of Apprentice Ecologists, and you'll get an official certificate. Visit the DGT™
