The Lord is With Me

The Lord is with me; I am not afraid; what can mortals do against me?
The Lord is with me as my helper; I shall look in triumph on my foes.
                                                                    Psalm 118:6-7
 Dear Friends,
Martin Luther's face is beginning to appear in new places across the Twin Cities.  On October 30th, Mia, the Minnesota Institute of Art, will open an exclusive exhibition entitled, "Martin Luther: Art and the Reformation."  In Germany, Luther's image has been celebrated for nearly a decade leading up to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on October 31, 2017.  In Lund, Sweden, even Pope Francis will gaze upon the image of Luther on Reformation Day this year as he joins with the heads of Lutheran World Federation from around the world for a Joint Ecumenical Commemoration of the Reformation   We too will have our own banner of Luther hoisted on the bell tower.
Theologians and church leaders, however, are confused about how they should commemorate the day.  They aren't all in agreement with the nature and breadth of Luther's legacy.  Was the Reformation a cultural movement?  Spiritual, musical, educational, economic, artistic, political or something else?  Truthfully, it had an effect on all of these areas of life, so we do need to focus on specific elements of Luther's work and inspiration.  Certainly, he had a great influence on religious music and its use of scripture.
Martin Luther's favorite psalm was Psalm 118.  It is traditionally appointed for Easter Sunday.  Luther said of this psalm, "This is my psalm, my chosen psalm. I love them all; I love all holy Scripture, which is my consolation and my life. But this psalm is nearest my heart, and I have a peculiar right to call it mine. It has saved me from many a pressing danger, from which nor emperor, nor kings, nor sages, nor saints, could have saved me. It is my friend; dearer to me than all the honors and power of the earth."  Countless musicians have used Luther's translation of the Bible for their choral arrangement of the psalm. Dietrich Buxtehude composed a stirring cantata, called "The Lord is With Me," based on the two verses listed above. The LOTI Choir and guests musicians under the direction of Dawn Allan will perform this work as a part of our own Reformation Sunday service at 9:30 October 30th.  This will launch our year of reflection on the Luther's heritage for second 500 years.  (As always, all are welcome to sing with the choir.  Simply join the choir for the last rehearsals.)
Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Performed by Shannon Norton Richards
OCTOBER 16 AT 1:30 P.M.

This massive instrument--a traditional carillon, played by a manual-action clavier keyboard-contains 48 bells cast in The Netherlands by the Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry. (The bells at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis were also cast by Royal Eijsbouts.) Together the bells of the Mobile Millennium Carillon-including the 2,000-pound, middle F bourdon-weigh 13 tons.
The 1:30 afternoon concert on the street in front of the church will be an opportunity to see up close and at street level what typically takes place high up in a bell tower and seen by very few. If you've never seen how a traditional carillon is played, you are in for an education and a treat. Sensations of seeing the carillonneur play, hearing the bells and feeling the vibration of sound blend into a unique and dynamic musical experience.

The Sunday nearest to October 18th, the Festival Day for St. Luke is often marked as a day for special services for healing.  St. Luke is referred to in scripture as the "Great Physician" and in medieval times he was the patron saint doctors and surgeons.  Numerous hospitals across the United States are named after St. Luke.
The service for Prayer and Healing on October 23rd will be a part of the Prayers of the Church and anointing of oil will occur during Holy Communion.
In many Lutheran churches the Confirmation worship service is known as the Affirmation of Baptism.  The name recalls the promises that were made by the parents and godparents at the time of a child's baptism.  They vowed that the Christian faith would be child's one day, and that they would speak on behalf of the child until that day comes.  The Rite of Affirmation is that coming of age for the young adult.   It is also a day for a renewal of the faith through the laying on of hands and the giving of the Holy Spirit.
On Reformation Sunday, October 30th we will celebrate confirmation with Ethan Rand, Stephanie Amann, Kate Mechels and Jorgen Olson at our 9:30 worship service.

Please join Dawn Allan and the LOTI choir on Wednesday evenings for rehearsal at 7:30 p.m.  Newcomers are welcome. The choir rehearses in Fellowship Hall.
9:15 A.M.

The prayer ministry group would welcome anyone who would like to join them on Friday mornings in the Christy Room at 9:15-10:00 a.m.  Please contact Deb Gilroy, Janna Haug or Linda Nelson for more information if you are interested.
7:30 P.M.
The informal study of  theology and "adult beverages" will be begin again this fall.  Following the model of Luther in his home in Wittenberg, Germany, Pastor Haug will lead a twice monthly gathering at the Parsonage.    Growlers and Theology will meet on October 13th and October 27th.

Looking ahead to November.
Want to talk to someone you haven't met before?  Conversation and Cuisine is a casual evening of getting better acquainted while enjoying a meal in our homes (or choice of a restaurant).  Groups of 5-7 members and friends of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church gather for three meals during the course of the year.   Four groups were formed this past year and from all reports, it sounds like they really enjoyed their time together.  New groups will be formed so that everyone will have a chance to get to know some more Lake of the Isles members.  If you would like to participate in the 2016-2017 groups, please let Janna Haug know by October 7th  at the latest You can talk to her during church coffee or contact her by email (jannahaug@yahoo.com)

A warm welcome to our new and returning kids in Sunday School!  It is so good to have the classrooms filled with children again!  We have a great staff of both high school and adult teachers making some wonderful connections with the kids.
Nursery is available and staffed. We are delighted to offer this ministry to our families with young children.  The nursery is located in the Christy Room and will be staffed during worship by our nursery attendant, Sheridan, every Sunday.  If you would like to use the nursery, simply check your child in using the sign-in sheet before returning to worship.
Guardian Angels wanted !  We are looking for caring adults who would like to be a Guardian Angel for one of our Sunday School children this year.  Guardian Angels are encouraged to pray for their Sunday School child during the year and also communicate anonymously throughout the year.  (It will be like a faith-filled pen pal exchange between you and your Sunday School child.)  The two of you will meet at the Guardian Angel Reveal party in May.  If you are interested in being a Guardian Angel, or need more information, please contact Diane LaMere ( dlamere.loti@yahoo.com ).
Here are October happenings in Children's Ministry:
October 2:  Blessing of the stuffed animals!  Kids of all ages are welcome to bring their most treasured stuffed animals for a special blessing after worship with Pastor Haug.  A fun and important tradition to honor St Francis enjoyed by all.
October 23:  NO Sunday School - MEA break
Winter Coat Drive kicks off October 30 .     As you begin to look at your gently used winter gear from last year and find that your children have outgrown them, please set them aside to donate to our winter gear drive.  Winter coats, hats, mittens and scarves are needed.  Adults are welcome to contribute as well!

2:00 P.M.
