House Dedication Happening in Struthers
Sunday, October 2nd at 2pm. We hope to see you there!
Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley (HFHMV) will host a House Dedication on Sunday, October 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at 58 Ridgeway Drive, Struthers, Ohio.
The home on Ridgeway is HFHMV's eighth house in Struthers, keeping with the organization's goal of providing decent housing to low-income families. The home was built for Janine DiPaola
. She was chosen because she met HFHMV requirements for income, credit, and willingness to partner.
The majority of funds for this build were acquired by the gracious donation of a house by Mr. Albert "Al" Gilchrist who left a property in New Middletown to HFHMV in his will. Gilchrist was an active volunteer with Habitat and helped open the Mahoning County ReStore on Youngstown-Poland Road. He passed away last summer and although gone, he certainly is not forgotten. Other sponsors for this house are the City of Struthers (CHIP Grant), Coventry Lighting, Valley Energy Solutions, Westminster College Campus Chapter, Bike & Build, AmeriCorps, Mike & Dawn-Elaine Muder, and Lowe's.
The walls were raised on this house in April 2016. The home was built primarily by volunteers and a group called The Habitat Road Trip Crazies (you may remember hearing about this and seeing pics in the May Newsletter). The Crazies are a group
that travel the east coast assisting small communities with Habitat for Humanity builds. They did a Blitz Build on April 23 & 24 on this house along with hundreds of other volunteers during that time and constructed the entire outside the home (in two days!).
You are ALL welcomed and encouraged to attend the dedication and see the house!

It's Halloween Season. Trick or Treat...
...smell my feet, give me something good to eat!
Every October, carved pumpkins peer out from porches and doorsteps. Gourd-like orange fruits inscribed with ghoulish faces and illuminated by candles are a sure sign of the Halloween season. The practice of decorating "jack-o'-lanterns" (the name comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack) originated in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes served as an early canvas. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, home of the pumpkin, and it became an integral part of Halloween festivities.
If you're looking for inspiration, decorations or accessories you'll need to make a trip to the
ReStore (480 Youngstown Poland Rd in Struthers). The ReStore has all your Halloween/Autumn needs from home decor, carving tool kits, glow sticks, costumes, paper plates & napkins, Trick or Treat buckets, and much more!
Hurry in though, things don't last in our ReStore long.
Hours of operation are: Wednesday-Saturday from 9am-4pm.

HFHMV Excited for World Habitat Day
Help us make it a special day!
Without a safe place to live, individuals are less likely to be healthy, less likely to be educated, and less likely to be able to take advantage of employment opportunities that could pull them out of poverty. To help address this need,
the United Nations in 1985 declared the first Monday in October as World Habitat Day, which this year falls on October 3, 2016.
HFHMV participates in this international event because we know that adequate shelter is critical to improve opportunities, health and education.
With your help, we can improve lives and communities in the Mahoning Valley. Any amount (big or small) makes a difference (and stays in the local area).
Please consider a donation today: Please Help with a Donation
*Special Note: October 3rd is also our Executive Director's birthday (feel free to visit our Facebook Page and wish her a cheerful special day). She'll be celebrating by swinging a hammer on a build site with staff and volunteers.

We Love Our Volunteers
Most Valuable Volunteer for October 2016
Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley (HFHMV) each month will start recognizing a volunteer that has shown exceptional dedication to our mission of building houses, community, and hope. The dedication of a Most Valuable Volunteer (MVV) extends outward in faith, support, and kindness for the homeowners, customers, and others for whom they have given their time, sweat, and energy.
We are excited to announce that Tony is our MVV for October!
Tony is one of the longest working volunteers for HFHMV. He keeps everyone on their toes and the build days filled with fun and amusement. Underlying, though, he is sincere and caring for those with whom he builds alongside as well as for the homeowners he has helped throughout the years.
"Tony is one of the most giving people I know. He is always willing to help out on non-build days and to never quit from a challenge. He is always accommodating and will do whatever is asked of him. He and all of the regular volunteers are a real asset to our affiliate." ~Michael Ondrey, HFHMV Construction Manager
"Tony is humorous in a grouchy, old man kinda way (KIDDING!!!)." ~Anonymous
"Tony's one of the most dedicated and dermined volunteers out there." ~Ceyanne, AmeriCorps Construction Team Leader

Become a Sign-A-Stud Sponsor
Be a part of a home without even swinging a hammer!
The Youngstown Columbiana Association of Realtors (YCAR) has been raising funds to build a house with Habitat for the past 10 months. The newest fundraiser is a Sign-A-Stud event. Anyone can purchase "a stud", decorate it in any way and then that stud(s) will be used in building the house. The messages and warm wishes designed on the studs will forever be a part of the home.
Although a family is still being selected, we know the house will be located in Boardman and we will probably start building mid/late Summer 2017. We will be keeping everyone up-to-date on progress so keep reading the newsletters for details.
To purchase a stud please contact Kristina at [email protected] or give her a call at 330-743-7244 x303. This is a terrific way to get involved!
