Dear Juanita Parents and Families:
The Work We All Share
Each public school in the state of Washington is required to develop and submit a Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) indicative of the "real work" of the particular school. Goals connected with the CIP plan and monitored throughout the year. Significant goals (improvement of SAT and ACT scores, percentage of students passing all of their classes, etc.) often span multiple school years.
I am happy to share data gathered associated with JHS CIP goals in the arenas of
credit accrual and
college readiness:
- The percentage of 9th graders earning all 6 credits increased from 78% in 2014 - 2015 to 86% last year;
- The percentage of 10th graders earning 12 credits increased from 62% in 2014 - 2015 to 78% last year;
- the percentage of 11th and 12th graders enrolled in a dual credit college-level course increased from 67.8% in 2014 - 2015 to 76.9% last year! (these include WANIC, Advanced Placement, CTE, College in the High School, Cambridge)
The above data continues the wonderful story of who we are not only as a school, but as a "village" of students, parents, staff and community partnerships.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership,
Sincerely,
Gary Moed

Mark your calendars!
October 19th: PSAT/NMSQT
The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) will be offered to all sophomores and juniors at Juanita on October 19th, and registration starts on October 2nd. There is a $16.00 administration fee, paid at the bookkeeper's office at time of registration (waived for students on free/reduced lunch). This PSAT is particularly important because it's the preparation for the new and redesigned SAT, which will be in effect in the spring of 2016.
Please advise your junior student that the PSAT they took in 10th grade year served only as a practice test. Only the Junior PSAT counts towards the NMSQT.
What is the PSAT/NMSQT?
Developed by the Educational Testing Service for the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the PSAT is a national test which measures verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities deemed important for academic success in college, and serves as a predictor of SAT scores. The PSAT focuses in ability to reason with facts and concepts rather than to recall and recite them.
Students in the 11th grade that score in the top 1% nationally may be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Our district also registers all sophomores for the PSAT test to provide practice and help them build confidence and familiarity with the test. However, sophomore scores do not count towards the Scholarship Program. For this reason, please encourage your junior student to register and practice for the test in October. About 16,000 of the students with the highest scores nationwide will qualify as semifinalists on a state representational basis, and they can advance to Finalist standing in the competition through the rigorous application process explained in the information provided to each Semifinalist by their counselor. In the end, around 8,000 winners of Merit Scholarship Awards are chosen from the finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.
Upcoming SAT and ACT testing dates and registration deadlines
Attention seniors! If you are planning to take the SAT or ACT one more time this year before applying for college, you need to register for the early administrations if you plan to apply to a four-year college by January. Scores take about four weeks to be mailed. Check collegeboard.org and act.org for registration.

Message From the President
Thank you to all who have participated in our PTSA Pass the Hat Fundraiser. PTSA projected budget was based on this event raising $13000 and we are not even half way there yet. So help us reach our goal by donating. Pass the Hat is the primary PTSA fundraiser of the year. Your tax-deductible donation of any amount helps support the students, teachers, and staff at Juanita through classroom grants, senior scholarships, safety and emergency prep supplies, and so much more. If you have not had the chance to donate, it is not too late. You can still donate on-line through the PTSA website,
www.jhsptsa.com or use this
form and drop it off in the office. Don't forget employer matches - as it's an easy way to double your gift.
Our next PTSA meeting will be on Wednesday October 12
th 7:00 in the library. After a
short regular meeting we will have Katie Konrad Moore from Collegewise speaking. Come to our meeting and even better bring a friend or two from school and join us.
See you all there,
Dr. Samsavar

Emergency Preparedness Tips
TIP: Food allergies
In a District wide emergency, the school has a limited supply of food to feed students until they are picked up. The school may or may not have appropriate food to meet the needs of all students with food allergies.
SUGGESTION: If your student has food allergies, please feel free to bring in a 3-5 day supply of food in a box/container that is securely closed and clearly marked with your student's name/grade and we will store it with the school's emergency supplies. You may also wish to provide your student with a few hour's supply to keep in their backpack at all times because it may take a little time to distribute the emergency supplies. (Bring to school's front office.)

Help Wanted

Join PTSA Donate to JHS!
Please consider joining the JHS PTSA. Joining the PTSA does not commit you to volunteer for functions, it's simply a donation to your school community that is greatly appreciated and re-invested in the school, students and staff. Thank you if you've already donated to our Pass the Hat fundraiser! If not, while you're online, please give what you can to our Pass the Hat campaign. It's our major fundraiser of the year. Unfortunately, we are far from our goal. If we reach $13,000, we won't need to spend additional time and resources on more fundraisers. No magazines, candy, cookie dough, etc. Also, if you work for a company that matches donations, please indicate so with your gift.
PTSA Ways and Means Chair
Needed
The ways and means chair works with the president and treasurer marketing and coordinating fundraisers to meet the PTSA annual budget. Also oversees Community Partnership Program, generating funds from community businesses. Can delegate committees for various projects. The major PTSA fundraiser, Pass the Hat, already has a chair. Interested?
