Newsletter
October 2017

Boo! It's spooky to think we are two months into the new school year.  However, we have a frighteningly good newsletter packed with announcements, opportunities and resources for the fall and winter that you don't want to miss.

Do you have new teachers in your district or colleagues who should have this information? Be sure to   and encourage them to sign-up for our emails  to stay on top of events and opportunities.
CSTP in Action

Diversity in Teaching Convening
Through the Network to Transform Teaching grant the WA State National Board Partners (CSTP, OSPI and WEA) convened a group of teachers of color in early October as a think tank to discuss problems of practice they face in the profession and discuss high leverage and high priority solutions. The essential questions they discussed were:
  • What are the barriers for teachers from diverse populations to remain in the profession throughout the continuum, graduation to Board Certification?
  • What are the barriers for teachers from diverse populations to serve as instructional leaders in schools, districts, state?
  • What are the barriers for teachers from diverse populations to connect and engage in opportunities with the partners?
  • What are the networks that are already established for teachers from diverse populations and how can the partners collaborate with and learn from those networks?
NBCTs Andrea Gamboa and LaShone Singleton skillfully facilitated the group over 3 days. The Partners received a wealth of information from the group and will be looking at ways they can take action and engage other partners in systematic work.

ESD 105 Teacher Leadership
Earlier this month CSTP had the opportunity to work with ESD 105 and teams of 40 teachers and administrators on the knowledge and skills of working with adults. The teams delved into the 'working with adults' part of CSTP's Teacher Leadership Framework [add hyperlink to Framework], honed and polished their skills and practiced these skills through scenarios and vignettes about teacher leadership conundrums. Teams had opportunities to think about contextualizing the work for their buildings and also had time to network with other colleagues from different districts to share their experiences.

Six Districts Work to Embed Accomplished Teaching Practice
The WA National Board Partners are excited to engage with six school districts this year to embed the National Board Body of Knowledge into different aspects of district systems of support - from early career teachers to instructional leaders to professional learning communities. The six districts (Burlington-Edison, Camas, Moses Lake, South Kitsap, Spokane and Sumner) along with the WA State National Board Partners (CSTP, OSPI and WEA) attended a National Board Learning Session in Chicago where they were able to network with other districts and states across the country, share resources for embedding accomplished practice across the educator continuum and plan strategies and activities for maximizing this work over the course of this school year. We look forward to the development and sharing of tools and resources that all educators in our state will be able to access and use.

CSTP Staff Retreat
CSTPers took a day to reflect on our team and the work we do now and in the future. This included some self-analysis work on the strengths each CSTPer brings to the organization using Strengths Finder (a book and assessment that identifies individuals top 5 strengths), some team-building activities (anyone else construct a tower out of spaghetti noodles?) and time to brainstorm and plan for current and future work (oh, the work that we could do!).

Recruiting Washington Teachers - Bilingual Educators Initiative

The Recruiting Washington Teachers - Bilingual Educators Initiative (RWT - BEI) Pilot Project is aimed at recruiting, preparing, and mentoring bilingual high school students, in order to prepare them to become future bilingual teachers and counselors in the state of Washington.  Through a competitive grant application process, pilot sites (with a minimum of one site east and one site west of the Cascades) will be created.

Districts, or district consortium, selected by the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) must partner with at least one two-year and one four-year college in planning and implementing the program (community colleges offering a bachelors of applied science would not require an additional partner), at least one of which is authorized to operate as a teacher preparation program in the State of Washington. Partnerships with Alternative Routes to Certification programs are strongly encouraged.

Bilingual Initiative classes will be taught using the  Recruiting Washington Teachers curriculum which emphasizes the importance of cultural identity and equity in the profession of teaching.
