October 2017 - Seattle

Westcrest Park - Forest Restoration Work Party
Green Seattle Partnership

Date/Time: Saturday, October 7, 10am - 2pm

Location: 9000 8th Ave SW, Seattle. Meet at the most southern part of the park. Click here for a map. You can park in the South parking lot off of SW Henderson St, next to the dog park.

Join DIRT Corps in revitalizing the southwest portion of Westcrest Park. The first step to bringing back this parcel is to remove invasive species. Once we have cleared the land, we will plant in later volunteer events. This volunteer event will start with a brief weed ID education class. You'll learn about the different types of invasives, why they are harmful, and how to get rid of them. Then you'll combine your new knowledge with action as we work together to clear this beautiful space of harmful species that overtakes an area. Please dress for the weather, and wear long clothing and closed toe shoes.

Ages: Families with children of all ages are welcome to volunteer.

Help Homeless Youth
YouthCare

Date/Time: Donations can be delivered Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm

Location: 2500 NE 54th St., Seattle

It's hard for most of us to imagine carrying all of our belongings - from hygiene supplies to clothing and shoes - on our back. Homeless youth face this challenge on a daily basis. You and your family can help by donating backpacks and the supplies needed to fill them. Or you can help spread the word and raise awareness about the issue of youth homelessness by doing a drive for needed items, which is a great way to help youth get the items they need to get off the streets and prepare for life. This is also a great opportunity to start a conversation in your family and community about what it would feel like to be homeless (i.e. why are socks so important?) Your support makes a big difference!
Most current and urgent needs are for:
  • Backpacks & messenger bags
  • New underwear & boxers
  • Alarm clocks & day planners
  • Scientific/graphing calculators
  • Art supplies
  • Nonperishable food
  • Gift cards (Safeway, Fred Meyer, Target, Ross, etc.)
You can also order from their  Amazon.com Wish List - items will be shipped directly to YouthCare!

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Varies

As you know, Doing Good Together promotes lessons in kindness and empathy through big-hearted conversations which often take place during storytime. Reading DGT's recommended books on topics such as kindness, gratitude, and mindfulness leads to great discussions. Likewise, DGT offers book lists on challenging issues, like bullying, hunger, and global poverty. Our newest book list focuses on the important subject of Death & Grief. We hope these books help you and your young ones start age appropriate conversations on a tough topic that deserves discussion.
