Mysteries and Revelations Exhibit

Three portraits from the Sturgis Library collections will be on display at the Cape Cod Museum of Art from September 24th through November 26th, 2017 as part of their exhibit Mysteries and Revelations:  Discovering Cape Cod's Museum Treasures.

Intriguing objects and their stories reveal fascinating facts about the unfamiliar past of Cape Cod and the Islands in this first Cape-wide collaboration of 36 art, science and history organizations on exhibit at the Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA).

Pondering unsolved mysteries or questioning true or false stories behind a wide range of artifacts, paintings, photographs, and curiosities, visitors will learn the remarkable truths and legends uncovered by these singular treasures preserved by each participating organization.

"Mysteries & Revelations" was organized by Cape Cod Museum of Art Director Edith (Deede) Tonelli and Guest Curator Amanda Wastrom in response to the theme for New England Museum Association's Conference this year:  "Truth & Trust: Museums in a Polarized Society."  The Conference takes place in Falmouth from October 24 - 27.

"How do we get to the truth?" asks Tonelli.  "This exhibit shines a light on the work of Cape Cod museum professionals who are on the front lines of documenting and preserving our history.  Ultimately, we--our culture and our history--are defined by the stories that we preserve and share with our community.  We invite our community to enter this show with their own stories and add to our shared cultural identity."

What makes the portraits of Mrs. William Sturgis and her two daughters Ellen and Caroline a revelation?  You'll have to come to the exhibit to find out!

The Cape Cod Museum of Art is located off Rte 6A at the Cape Cod Center for the Arts, Dennis Village.  It is in the complex with the Cape Playhouse and the Cape Cinema.

Don't miss the public reception on Thursday, September 28th from 5:30 to 7 pm.  We hope to see you there.

Pottery+ Sale

We will be holding a pottery and dishware sale the week of Monday, October 16th through Saturday, October 21st, 2017.  Pottery, dishware, and kitchenware of all kinds will be available, including plates, bowls, mugs, vases, glasses, pitchers, casseroles, platters and decorative pieces.  A number of the pieces were made by local potters.

We are accepting donations of gently used or new pottery and dishware through October 14th.  We are particularly interested in handmade pieces.  Donations can be dropped off at the library during regular hours.  Don't forget to ask for a donation card to use for tax purposes.  And plan to stop by and shop the week of October 16th!  Everything will be priced to sell, and all proceeds go directly toward enhancing programs and services.

Upcoming Exhibits and Displays

October Exhibits and Displays

In the Simpkins Room, Antonia Cook will be displaying her pen and paper portraiture done during Cape Cod model sessions. These specific sessions were held in Barnstable, Chatham, and Dennis. Influenced by classical Western artists such as Botticelli, Rubens, and van Dyck, her work reflects such inspiration through her detailed depiction of the human form.

In the front
lobby, Susan Davies will be displaying her hand painted, kiln dried tiles depicting scenes from around the Cape. Also included in her display is a map of Cape Cod done on glass. Susan summered on the Cape as a child, which is where she gained her inspiration for her ocean landscapes and lighthouse vistas.

Get your 150th Anniversary Whale Ornament

Sturgis Library's 150th Anniversary whale ornaments are here!  Handcrafted by Barnstable Pottery in Barnstable Village, they feature a happy breaching whale in celadon (or seafoam) green.

The Library installs  a "Light Giant" whale in the front yard each winter, lit up in blue and white lights, and this whale ornament is modeled after that light giant.  A whale also graces the library's tote bags, and a large mobile called Moby's Pod hangs in the atrium near the children's room.  So whales are near and dear to our hearts.

Ornaments are $15 each.  Only 150 were made, so get yours today!  You can purchase yours at the Library, or call and charge to your credit card and we will ship (add $5 for shipping and handling).
