DIY Craft Projects for BARCS
BARCS (Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter)

Date/Time: Items can be dropped off Monday - Friday, 10:30am to 6pm and Saturday - Sunday, 8:30am - 4pm

Location: 301 Stockholm St., Baltimore

Get involved and help the animals at BARCS with these fun DIY craft projects.
  • Cat Food Puzzle: You will need an empty toilet paper roll, scissors and kid-safe (water soluble) markers. On your toilet paper rolls, mark four lines about a finger's width apart. Carefully cut along those lines to make four rings. Draw fun designs and colors on each of the rings. Insert ring 1 into ring 2. Then insert ring 3 into rings 1 and 2. Then squeeze the fourth ring inside the others to make a ball. Put cat treats or pieces of food into the ball. No catnip for the shelter cats, please!
  • Cat Spider Toy: All you need for this project is a 5x5" piece of scrap fabric (felt and fleece work best), milk jug rings and scissors. Cut the fabric square into 12- 14 thin strips. Tie the strips around the ring using a double-knot. Tie until your ring is full! Try different color combinations to make it fun! No catnip for the shelter cats, please!
  • Hand-Knotted Fleece Blankets: These do not need to be large to be cozy for our animals! Small blankets (12x24') are especially helpful for our cats! Instructions: Lay the two pieces of fleece wrong sides together. With the fabric on top of each other, trim off any ends as necessary to make them the same size. Cut out a square about 3-4 inches from each corner. This will prevent bunching of the material in the corners and help to make tying easier. Next cut out slits - almost like a fringe - about 3 inches deep all the way around the fabric. Just make sure you cut deep enough so that you can tie the pieces together. Tie the matching top and bottom slits together into double knots (helps them to say together after washing).
Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Varies
