Member Spotlight:
I am Todd Gast, Marketing/Outreach Manager at Keweenaw Co-op. I am originally from Dollar Bay, MI and I attended Michigan Tech and graduated from Michigan State University with a BFA in Graphic Design. I escaped the region many years ago to see how the rest of the world operated and landed on the eastern seaboard. I spent most of my adult life in New York City as an Art Director/Graphic Designer specializing in editorial design, corporate design, advertising, marketing, public relations and communications. In 2017, Keweenaw Co-op was looking for a new Marketing/Outreach Manager and I was looking to make a change in my life — perfect timing. Moving back to the Copper Country is allowing me the opportunity to give back to the community that gave me so much to me while growing up. Even though I have moved back to the U.P. — I still maintain a client base in New York City, Providence, Boston and Philadelphia — freelancing on a contract basis, providing client services to various companies.

Keweenaw Co-op was established in 1973 as a pre-order bulk-buying club to provide the community with natural and organic foods. Our first home was the back room of "Funky's Karma Cafe" in downtown Houghton, MI. In 1986 — after moving two more times significantly increasing our product line and supporting a paid staff — Keweenaw Co-op moved to our current location at 1035 Ethel Avenue in Hancock and opened as a "full-line grocery, gourmet market & deli." Today, Your Co-op provides high quality, minimally processed and packaged products at the lowest prices possible. We offer fresh LOCAL, regional and organic choices whenever the season provides and we feature alternatives for those that may have food sensitivities — we feature healthy vegan, vegetarian and omnivore options for the entire community. We also have the best Deli in town and the only “Fresh Juicer” in our region. THANK YOU COPPER COUNTRY for 45+ YEARS of Support!

Q: How many years has Keweenaw Co-op been in business?
A: Our anniversary is November 8th and we are just wrapping up celebrating our 45th year in business.

Q: What are some interesting facts about your business most people don’t know?
A: You don’t have to be an owner at Keweenaw Co-op to shop here — everyone is welcome at any time. We are all about our local community and local products — we currently support 24+ local growers/farmers.

Q: Do you have any advice for new business owners?
A: There is plenty of need and plenty of business opportunities to fill that need — it takes hard work. Find your niche and get down to work.

Q: What are your business goals?
A: Growing our business, reaching more people with our outreach programs and supporting our community in any way we can. We believe that with a healthy/prosperous business we can do more outreach and do more good deeds in our community.

Skillshare is an online learning platform with thousands of classes in dozens of disciplines — including marketing, design, productivity, software training and more. Classes are suitable for a range of skill levels and are taught in an approachable way with a focus on practical application.

Additionally, many of the classes are taught by some of the best-known practitioners in their respective field (e.g. renowned designer Aaron Draplin teaches logo design, entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk teaches social media strategy, TED Talk sensation, Simon Sinek teaches presentation skills, etc.) or in conjunction with some of the leading companies in a particular discipline (Mailchimp teaches email marketing, Atlassian teaches how to build a high performing team).

Each Skillshare class has an associated project to allow students to practice what they learn, and customized class recommendations based on individual interests and engagement will help give each participant a personalized experience tailored to their specific needs.

Our roots run deep in the Keweenaw
Upper Peninsula Power Company was created in 1947 through a merger of three utilities. One of them, the Houghton County Electric Light Company, earlier acquired the interests of Peninsula Electric Light and Power, which began operating in the Keweenaw in 1884 – just five years after Edison invented the light bulb.
From the Edison bulb to high-tech electronics of today, you might say UPPCO has been providing “ U.P. Power ” for more than 130 years.
