October 2016

 From the Director's Desk...

At our most recent retreat, we spent a significant amount of time brainstorming.  We heard from our partners what is happening throughout the state around the opiate issue.  Collectively, the Eastern Iowa Heroin Initiative, the CRUSH Chapters,  the Iowa Pharmacy Association, and the Iowa Pharmacy Board shared the actions that are being taken to address the emerging trends.  It is obvious the work of the local communities is making an impact on these initiatives.

The Office of Drug Control Policy has been working with AC4C to identify and map the local drug take back boxes.  AC4C members have been of assistance to identify where there is a local need.  The Iowa Pharmacy Association has agreed to join this effort by providing a controlled substance drug take back box in a pharmacy willing to host one - for free!  All they have to do is ask.  Through these efforts, by the end of the year all 99 counties will have a solution to properly disposing unused controlled substances.

Together we decided what could be done by AC4C to support the efforts around opiate abuse.  We conducted a consensus workshop and discovered it was important for us to do a "Data Dive" which will "Increase Capacity" and "Create a Public Toolbox" to "Support the Healthcare System".   The documents that were created around this activity are available in our drop box.   In Iowa, we are ahead of the epidemic other states are seeing. T ogether we will provide a unified effort to limit the impact this emerging trend has on the country.

Thanks for all you do!
Angie

Policy Committee Update

The policy committee has been working on public service announcements concerning marijuana and is starting to plan the Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Day on the Hill, which is  February 23, 2017.  The committee is also  working towards evidence-based alcohol policies by participating with the Governor's committee revisiting the Chapter 123 code governing alcohol policies.  This code has not changed in over 30 years.  If you would like to hear more about the work being done, please join us during our next GoTo Meeting, October 24th @ 2:30.   The login information is located in this roundtable under Policy Work Group.

Capacity Committee Update

Current responsibilities at this time:
  • Look for outside funders to improve sustainability
  • Advocate that Best Practices are followed and shared
  • Focus on Evaluation by the creation and capture of Success Stories and
    lessons learned,
  • Build the partners at the table.
The potential strategies for building capacity to focus on at this time were:
  • Need short term indicators - may need to develop into an evaluation committee.
  • Seek partnerships that can share state level data for evaluation purposes.
  • In year 6 evaulation, show cooperation and how we have partnered.
  • Revisit circles of involvement to identify growth and gaps
  • Look for additional funding
  • Hold a conversation of how committees connect.
We are looking for success stories!

Some ideas of what a Success Story might contain:
  • Being valued as a resource
  • Increasing successful partnerships
  • Demonstrating shared leadership
  • Having meaningful youth involvement
  • Providing examples of creating change
  • Sustaining environmental change
  • Achieving successful outcomes.
