Don't Overthink It!
Several years ago I took my son Zev to our dentist to have baby teeth extracted. Zev sat down in the chair and proceeded to ask him a long series of detailed questions about the procedure he was about to undergo. After Zev was finished, the dentist looked at him and said "Zev, don't overthink it." The doctor went right ahead with the extraction, briefly explaining what was about to happen right before each step. After that day "Don't Overthink It" has become a motto in our house. Most things in life are not nearly as complicated as we make them out to be. But my son was young and understandably apprehensive. He had no idea what to expect until he actually experienced it.

How do people overthink dating? Some people develop long elaborate lists of what they want/don't want. Some call as many references as they can find, even before the first date. They think that by exerting control over the process they can eliminate uncertainty and alleviate any apprehension. But as  we all know (too well!) this is a process that can't be controlled. I'm sure you have all heard stories of marriages that didn't look good "on paper." You've probably also heard stories of marriages where the first date was a disaster. So, don't overthink it! Come up with a BRIEF list of 'must haves' and 'won't accepts'. If the match meets your preliminary guidelines and you've spoken to one or two references, go out on a date! The experience is the only way to really know for sure.
