Reeling Stoner

from Bill Huber

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Kenai River Clean Up and the AFF Fly Fishing Fair and Spey Clave.  It was great to see so many members, new members, and those just interested in being a part of a good cause.  I also want to extend a special thank you to the volunteers who gave so much of their time and energy to make sure we more successful AFF activities.

Well, this has been another exciting fishing season!  The salmon came into the rivers in great numbers and impressive size.  The weather this summer was much better than I am sure anyone of us could have scripted any better.   The results have produced numerous fishing stores, many full freezers, and a very healthy winter eating delicious fish dishes ... we are blessed to call Alaska our home!

As many know, we are moving our club meeting location beginning October 5th. W e will be meeting at the Elks Lodge, 3101 Penland Parkway, Northway Mall.  This new location change is going to benefit the club and provide an opportunity for AFF funds to better support the club's mission and objectives.  I ask AFF members to be open to the change and understand with change comes challenges and opportunities. We are committed to work through these issues as we develop another new and exciting club chapter.

Last, please review below the election committees comments and the club's new board of candidates.  I thank all of you who expressed an interest in serving and look forward to working with a new board in the coming months.

As always, keep the lines clean and the fish on!

Bill Huber

Our October General membership meeting will feature Farley Dean, owner of Willow Creek Resort, on the banks of Willow Creek, just north of Wasilla.  Farley has a wealth of knowledge of the streams, creeks, and rivers of the Western Mat-Su Valley.  He is well versed when it comes to fishing, habitat and food sources, run sizes and timing, and many other topics in those areas of the Mat-Su  valley.

Just a reminder: The Alaska Fly Fishers general membership meetings will now be held at the Anchorage Elks lodge in the Northway Mall next to Carrs.

Can't wait to see you at the meeting, bring a friend,

A Fish that Changed the World
by Bill Hauser
I recently read an interesting book entitled: Cod, A Biography of a Fish that Changed the World, by Mark Kurlansky. I highly recommend it from several perspectives. First, of  course, because it is about one of my favorite subjects - fish; but, more importantly, it is  about people and fish; and Kurlansky has a unique approach. One portion does focus on  the biology of cod, but mostly, this is a story that interweaves history, sociology, biology,  technology, oceanography, explorations, and cooking. It is quick and easy to read,  especially because about a third of the space is devoted to interesting quotes, pictures,  and historic recipes. In short, it is a case history of a truly international fishery.

Tying clinics will continue through the summer, same time, same place, thanks to Dave Rooker. Dave will be manning the post so I can get out and enjoy Alaska on the weekends. As always, if you have any ideas for a demonstration, please contact Dave (you'll find him at the next general meeting).

Feel free to come hang out from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the William J. Hernandez Fish Hatchery on Saturday, October 17th. The hatchery is located on the corner of Reeve Blvd and Post Road. C'mon down, it's free to the public and the coffee's always on.

    Kenai River Fishing Trip

A Wonderful Day on the Kenai River
PHW Alaska took seven program participants on a trip to fish for rainbows on the Kenai River near Sterling on September 20th.  All participants had a wonderful time catching rainbow, dollies and late- run sockeye.  Several participants had the thrill of landing rainbow over 24 inches!

A special note of thanks goes out to businesses who helped to sponsor the trip, including  Alaska Fishing and Lodging (Tyland Vanlier and Damond Blankenship - guides), Alaska Fishing Service (Kevin Thurman), the Aspen Hotel in Soldotna, and Don Jose's in Soldotna.
