Working With Salt in Therapeutic Practice

Salt. Normally, we would think of it as a way to flavor our food. However, we rarely draw attention to the detoxifying and cleansing properties of this precious mineral. Salt is important in regulating the water levels of the body, but can also be used externally for cleansing and purifying. Unprocessed salts are natural anti-inflammatory and antibiotic agents, and have been used as such for centuries.

Rock Salt Lamp: Available at many online retailers and in holistic boutiques around the nation, salt lamps release negative ions which neutralize air quality. Lamps are usually made of Himalayan Rock Salt and emit a soft, soothing glow.

Salt Soak/Scrub: Soaking in Epsom Salt has been proven to reduce muscle pain and fatigue and soothe skin irritation. Salt had detoxifying properties, so indulging in a post-massage salt soak can help you feel amazing. Similarly, adding salt to a skin scrub can help extract those extra toxins from the skin.

Food of the Month: The Sweet Potato

Full of Vitamin A, and high in Potassium and Fiber, sweet potatoes are very low in fat and can help to make your Autumn dinners complete. See below for a great recipe to try using these tasty and nutritious little guys!

Curried Sweet Potato Fries

1 Sweet Potato
1 Tbsp. Olive Oil
1 Tsp. Curry Powder
3/4 Tsp. Sea Salt
1/4 Tsp. Grated Lime Zest
Lime Wedges for Serving

Directions: Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Chop sweet potato into long, thick wedges. Mix together all other ingredients (except for lime wedges) in a bowl or plastic bag. Add sweet potato pieces and toss to coat evenly. Lay sweet potatoes on baking sheet and cook in oven until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Serve with lime wedges as optional garnish.

All Thai'd Up!

Thai massage, developed along with other ancient medicinal techniques practiced in Eastern culture, is quickly becoming a very popular alternative modality of massage within Western culture. Using a combination of stretches and compressions, the therapist pushes and pulls you into an intensely deep level of release and revival.

During a Thai Massage, you can expect to experience deep rhythmic pressure, resulting in a similar feeling as experienced in a yoga class. The main difference is that the Thai Massage therapist is able to bend and flex your body in ways you wouldn't normally. They can also effectively guide you so as to avoid injury and reach a deeper level of release in the muscles and tendons.

Thai massage can be combined with a more

traditional Swedish style massage or practiced in its entirety using a floor mat. Advanced Holistic Health currently offers both options as a complete service or as an add-on.

Though Thai Massage was developed over 2,500 years ago, it is still popular throughout the world today. In Thailand, it is not uncommon for people to incorporate massage therapy as a central part of their health care routine. You can also discover the benefits of this fun and dynamic modality of massage by trying out a Thai session.

Q & A with Therapist Gladys Ayala:

Client Communication

Q: What is the most important piece of information to share with your therapist before getting a massage?

A: Medications. And a brief health history is always helpful.

Q: What is the best way to describe any pain you may be experiencing?

A: Using words like "burning" "throbbing" "tingling" or "sharp" helps to specify what kind of pain. I'm not a big fan of the 1-10 pain scale, but it works for some therapists.

Q: In terms of health history, what should you be sure to include?

A: Broken bones, major health issues, blood pressure problems.

Q: Should you communicate during the massage? If so, how?

A: You should always communicate if there is discomfort. I like picky clients. It's your massage, not mine. So the more information I have the more likely I am to give you what you are looking for.

Q: Is it appropriate to provide feedback after the massage?

A: Yes, totally! It's a great way to build repoire and make sure the client is getting what they need and want.

5 Yoga Poses for Relaxation

 1. Standing Side Stretch: Stand with your feet close together. As you draw your breath in, lift your arms above your head. Now, slowly exhale and gently bend to the right. You should feel an elongating stretch in your side body. If desired, you can grab your left wrist with your right hand and pull gently, creating an even deeper stretch. Repeat with the opposite side of the body.

2. Standing Forward Fold: From standing, inhale deeply and reach your arms high above your head. As you exhale, fold slowly forward, bending at the hips. You should be completely relaxed. Don't try to push it too far. Just let your arms hang naturally wherever they are.

3. Cat/Cow Alteration: Gently lower your knees to the ground and arrange your shoulders and hips so they are parallel, as if your body was a table. Slowly begin to arch your back, exhaling as you go. Your spine will curve and you will feel a great release. Next, as you inhale, flex your spine gently in the opposite direction by elongating and lifting the tail bone and head. Let your belly drop and open the front of your body.

4. Bridge Pose: Start by laying on your back. Gradually lift your pelvis off the ground, pushing it toward the sky. Be sure to protect your neck and upper back by adjusting your shoulders until they are underneath you. Hold this pose for as long as comfortable to you, remembering to breathe deeply and with purpose.

5.  Child's Pose: The classic. From table pose, stretch backwards, resting your bottom on the tops of your feet. You

can reach your arms forward or let them lay alongside your

body, wrapping your torso around your legs. Breathe deeply. Close your eyes. Exhale.
