President's Note

Dear Friends,

Fall is here...my favorite season! Our carpenter will start work on the ceiling in a week or so. Soon we will start to see major changes being accomplished inside the gallery.

Mark your 2018 calendar! Our 2018 GALA Spring Show will be April 27-29 at the Winchendon American Legion.

GALA is working on the design details to paint a wall mural in Winchendon in the Spring. We are working with the art department at MWCC that did the mural in Gardner. If you are seriously interested in taking part and would like to help please send me an email with samples of your artwork. Please note that we are looking for artists that know they are capable to paint in large scale. There will be a small stipend for each artist. Send your interest and artwork samples to [email protected].

Sincerely,

Deb Giordano
President of GALA

Boot Drive

Our Boot Drive was very successful on the 23rd. We would like to thank and appreciate those that sacrificed a beautiful fall day to come out and help raise funds to support the arts. We raised money and had fun at the same time. We would like to thank the drivers for stopping and supporting the arts. We want to thank the town of Winchendon for supporting GALA and allowing us to have our Boot Drive. We thank the Winchendon History and Culture Center for helping in setting up and had the use of their cones and t-shirts. We want to give a huge thank you to Mary Varone (Ashburnham), Latrice Cooper (Gardner), Keila Ploof (Orange), Nowell Francis (Templeton), Susan Ellis (Ashburnham), and Delilah (Gardner).

GALA Renovations Update

Our carpenter will start work this month on the inside. He will be installing insulation and shiplap boards on the ceiling and gables. We are getting really excited and have been eagerly waiting for this stage.

Latrice Cooper

It has come to our attention that GALA member, Latrice Cooper, will be heading for California to develop her art on the West Coast. Having had a rich exposure to studio art - painting, sculpture, drawing, and photography throughout high school in Syracuse, New York, Latrice has created art in many media, but she chose photography as her favorite medium of expression. She continued her art studies at Syracuse University. She credits the Worcester Center for Crafts for her lessons in photography, where she learned Ansel Adam's Zone System technique taught by Peter Faulkner. GALA offered the opportunity to exhibit her art photography. Her art photography was recognized at GALA art shows and at the Fitchburg Art Museum, the Danforth Museum, the Women's Caucus for Arts, and many other other places. Working as a freelance photographer for The Gardner News allowed Latrice to develop commercial accounts along the way. Permanent exhibits can be seen in meeting rooms and public spaces at Williams Restaurant, the GFA Credit Union, the Gardner VNA, Planet Fitness, and at Montachusett Regional Technical School. Always interested in promoting community beauty, by working with Square two and the Mayor's Office, Latrice shared her vision of the potential of Gardner and stimulated efforts to enhance the attractiveness of the downtown business district. We will miss you, Latrice!

October Openings at ArtsWorcester
ArtsWorcester, Worcester, MA

Aula Alayoubi, Fruit of Heaven
John Hayes-Nikas, The Return
Susan Swinand, All Together Now
Artists' reception: October 6, 2017, 6:00 to 8:00 PM
660 Main Street

Images, from left to right:
Aula Alayoubi: A Nymph with Pomegranate, acrylic on canvas, 25 x 29"
John Hayes-Nika: The Alsatian ou Eisassich, graphite and ink on paper 30 x 22", 2017
Susan Swinand: Truth, ink on clayborad, 18 x 14"

Join us to celebrate the opening of three solo exhibitions, unified by strong linear mark-making.

Aula Alayoubi's mysterious acrylic paintings use two forms, the female body and the pomegranate, to explore ideas of earthly loss and heavenly reward. With map-lines and traditional engravings marking their faces and limbs, the gorgeous female figures dominating these canvases represent Damascus, Alayoubi's native city. Pomegranates traditionally signify love, fertility, and knowledge, but also invoke the heavenly rewards promised in death to radicalized soldiers. This fruit, and the distorted, mournful figures holding it, tell a cautionary tale of beauty, loss, and memory.

John Hayes-Nikas' series of large graphite drawings are rendered with elegant abstract formalism. With their subtle contrast between clearly-delineated negative space and more gestural strokes, the works invoke aspects of early Cubism, while the mysterious push and pull of the dark forms reference pre-Christian sacred spaces.

Susan Swinand's series of whimsical drawings take a line of for a walk through the subconscious. Ordinary objects and abstract shapes bubble and bounce around each other, producing a jolly stream-of-conscious effect. The small scale and precision of these drawings, however, belie the complex, if merry, universes they contain, in which all things are interrelated and interdependent.

The opening reception and gallery hours are free to the public. Refreshments are sponsored by Ed Hyder's Mediterranean Market, and music by Jose Castillo. The exhibit runs through November 4, with gallery hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 12:00 to 4:00 PM, and by appointment at other times. Free parking for the opening is available in the lots belonging to the Freemasons, at Ionic and Beacon Street.

Mixed Media Exhibit by Maureen Ahern
The Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

Gilson Pond by Maureen Ahern
The Jaffrey Civic Center will host a mixed media exhibit of paintings by New Hampshire artist, Maureen Ahern from September 8th-October 7th, 2017. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Most of Maureen Ahern's latest work uses interference paint, along with other media.  Interference paint has the property of reflecting just half of the light spectrum. For instance, blue paint looks blue, but depending on the light source and where the viewer stands, will instead appear yellow (its opposite color on the light spectrum). The effect this has had on such pieces can be seen in this video [http://ahernartist.com/video/] where light is shown moving across the painting surface, causing the colors to change to their opposite. In addition to interference paint, many of Ahern's works utilize pieces of compact disc. The reflective surface of the disc amplifies the variable nature of the interference paint. Other media may include oil sticks, pencil, wax, nails, feathers, and other materials. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Maureen lives in New Hampshire where she works full-time in her studio.

"I grew up and lived by the coast of Massachusetts for many years. My fascination with the beauty and the power of the ocean continues to influence my work. Since coming to the Monadnock region of New Hampshire in 1981, I have explored the ever-changing aspects of water, the variables of light, air, color, and motion in nature; and the human spirit."

The Jaffrey Civic Center is located at 40 Main Street, Jaffrey, New Hampshire, next to the Library, parking in rear. Hours are Monday-Friday from 10am to 5pm (closed 12-1pm), Sat 10am-2pm. Admission is always free. For more information about us, call 603-532-6527, e-mail us at [email protected], visit our website, or "Like" us on Facebook.
