LAPD Central Bureau Receives Autism Awareness Training

On October 9, officers from LAPD's Central Bureau participated in "Mission Possible: LAPD's Autism Spectrum Disorder Training Program," which provides an opportunity for law enforcement professionals to learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through hands-on simulations provided by trained ASD experts.

Thanks to support from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the LAPF has funded this training for approximately 400 officers and 400 students over the last three years.

At the day-long training, approximately 100 students with ASD and their caregivers participate so that officers develop real-world understanding and are given tools needed to meet the distinct social, communication, and behavioral needs of individuals with ASD.

LAPD Lt. Stacy Spell, who spoke at Thursday's training said, "Most of us come on to protect the most vulnerable of our society. People with autism, with development disabilities, they are the most vulnerable." Lt. Spell has a teenage son with autism and is the president of the Los Angeles Police Autism Support Group.

LAPF Funds Medical Screenings for LAPD Officers

On October 15, the Department's Medical Liaison Section hosted its annual LAPD Health Fair.

Thanks to support from Cedars-Sinai and Providence Health & Services Southern California, the LAPF funded a mobile clinic at the event that provided medical screenings to nearly 200 sworn and civilian personnel. Biometric screenings included Heart Risk Assessment, Cholesterol Panel, Glucose Blood Screening, Blood Pressure, Height, Weight, and Body Mass Index, as well as vision and hearing tests.

The Health Fair provided Department employees educational materials on wellness, as well as the opportunity to become aware of undetected health problems and seek follow up care with their physicians.  Having healthy employees can reduce absenteeism, reduce health care costs, and improve morale.

LAPF Funds Domestic Violence Initiatives

At a recent press conference, Chief Charlie Beck announced that spousal abuse was up 18% in L.A. this year with 1,300 more documented cases of domestic violence so far in 2014 compared to last year.

Chief Beck called for everyone to work together to "Break the Silence & Stop the Violence" on this severely under-reported crime.

The LAPF is proud to partner with the Verizon Foundation, the Weingart Foundation, and BNSF Railway to support the following LAPD initiatives that support victims of domestic abuse.

  • Domestic Abuse Response Team - The LAPD Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) is a collaborative effort between police officers and volunteer advocates from the community that responds to the scene of a domestic violence call. DART members provide support to the victim, promote the victim's safety, and facilitate prosecution.
  • Valley CARES Family Justice Center  - The Valley CARES Family Justice Center represents an eight-year collaboration between the Center for Assault Treatment Services, the Valley Trauma Center, and the LAPD to create a meaningful, co-located response to victims of interpersonal violence.
