MyCom: My Commitment, My Community

A public-private partnership dedicated to connecting youth to caring adults

and positive options in a safe environment.

Parma MyCom youth participated as Ambassadors of Compassion and were able to attend the Inaugural Cleveland Class of Ambassadors of Compassion at Progressive Field in September 2013. Ambassadors of Compassion L.I.F.E. is a program integrating critical life principles into the lives of students and their communities. Parma youth raised funds to purchase hygiene items for Lakeside Men's Shelter. At Progressive Field, youth were able to view the Indians game, meet former players, and walk on the field after the game.

Greetings!

Supporting our future leaders is paramount to a strong economy for today and tomorrow.

In this issue, we recognize national and local efforts that promote building the skills of our future leaders.  The initiatives and programs are an effort to ensure success for our youth, inspire them to lead, empower them to help make positive changes in our community, and secure the future economic strength of our region.

Shaker Empowers Youth & Promotes Youth Leadership through Youth Council

In August 2013, the Shaker Youth Council graduated 6 of their seniors with 5 continuing on to post-secondary education at Cleveland State University, Ohio University, Cuyahoga Community College, and the University of Akron.  Congratulations to our future leaders from Shaker!

As empowered youth in their community, the Youth Council members drafted their own "leadership survey" which they used to elect new officers including a new officer position of Communications/Engagement who maintains regular contact with members.

On Saturday, October 19th from 3:00 - 6:30p.m. the Youth Council is sponsoring a Diversity Day titled "Breaking Barriers, Building Unity" with a theme of "Different Backgrounds Shared Values, One Vision" and all are invited to attend.  For more information about the Shaker Youth Council, click here.

Youth Leadership Brings Our County Together!

In early August, a team of selected youth leaders from three constituencies in the county retreated to a Boy Scout camp in central Ohio to begin a four-month long training leading to new skills for the youth leaders and completing a service-learning project.  The youth are affiliated with the county Youth Advocacy and Leadership Coalition, Key Club at High Tech Academy, and West Park MyCom.  Their goLEAD training continues in small groups until December when they will all reconvene to celebrate and share the skills learned through this experiential educational program.

goLead (generationOn Leadership, Education, and Development program) inspires, equips, and mobilizes youth to take action that changes the world and themselves through service.  Participants develop critical leadership skills while planning a capstone service project, which is the culmination of the goLEAD institute.
