Local public service heroes will be honored Friday, Oct. 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rock Falls Chamber Guest Bartender Night at Long Shot Bar and Grill, Rock Falls. The event officially kicks off the fun leading up to the annual Hometown Holidays on Nov. 21 -24. All proceeds benefit the four days of holiday festivities.

Law enforcement, fire and hospital professionals are the honored guests on Oct. 18 and will serve as guest bartenders as part of the Hometown Holidays theme, "A Holiday for Heroes".

Taking tips will be Mike Kuelper, Rock Falls Police chief; Bill Milby, Rock Falls Fire Department captain; Joe Real, CGH Medical Center paramedic; and Illinois State Police.  Tickets for a 50/50 Raffle will also be sold by the Rock Falls Chamber Ambassadors, who are hosting the evening. All proceeds will go to support costs for putting on the Hometown Holidays.

Mark Oct. 18 on your calendar for the Guest Bartender Night and also show your support for the businesses that work together to make your holiday so enjoyable. During the pre-Christmas shopping season and all year round consider your hometown businesses when you make a purchase. Your support affects whether businesses can partner in putting on future Hometown Holidays events.

- President/CEO Bethany Bland's News You Can Use-Bland

Recently, the Rock Falls Chamber welcomed an Aide from Congresswoman Cheri Bustos' Office.   Shortly before that, we hosted State Senator Jacobs and State Rep Smiddy.   Members were able to ask questions and express concerns.  There has been a lot of talk lately about health care, government shut downs, government regulations, and everything in between.

I want to challenge our members.  What good is talk if you are not talking to the right person?

If you have a complaint about government,  let your elected official know.  You cannot expect change if you do not communicate to the right place.  I would especially encourage local business owners who are feeling the pressure from recent government decisions to flood the phones, e-mails, and mailboxes of elected officials with their specific problems.  Apathy gives those in government the impression that we do not care.  If we are just going to sit around the office and gripe, but we are not willing to put the effort into creating change, it sends the message that we are going to accept whatever government sends our way.

If you are not sure what to do, how to do it, when, or where, let us know.  We will provide you with the who, the what, the when, the where, and leave the WHY all up to you.

To get you started, here is a link to finding your elected official's contact information.
