"Mindfulness gives you time.  Time gives you choices.  Choices skillfully made, lead to freedom.  You don't have to swept away by your feeling.  You can respond with wisdom and kindness rather than habit and reactivity."

Dear friend,

Last fall we told you about Street Yoga's partnership with OHSU for the Meals, Mindfulness and Moving Forward (M3) program.  M3 is a multi-model approach to addressing cardiovascular risk and building resilience in youth suffering from psychosis.  This month we are following-up and are pleased to share the reflections of Street Yoga Volunteer Teacher, Greta Hau, who led the mindfulness sessions at for M3 this past spring:

"For 12 Saturdays I spent my mornings teaching mindfulness and yoga to a group of exceptional individuals and their family and friends. The young adults I worked with came from various backgrounds and cultures, but they all had one thing in common; they all experienced psychosis. I didn't know a lot about psychosis and the affects most psychosis medications had until I became involved in this project. At the M3 orientation I learned about how many of the medications taken by these young people have their own effect on the body and mind- one of the most common side effects being weight gain. This program was focused on helping youth experiencing psychosis find a way to live a healthy lifestyle through mindfulness, movement, and nutrition. The more I learned about the objectives of this project, the more excited I was to be a part of it.

The individuals I met through this program were inspiring. I truly believe that practicing mindfulness and yoga can be life changing. I also think it can be incredibly vulnerable. Breathing deep, sitting quietly, noticing your environment and feeling sensations in your body  are not things that I consider easy.  In fact, what can make this so challenging is the things that come up when we are still. The mother of one participant asked me if it was normal to feel emotional after doing the mindfulness exercises. Many participants nodded in agreement.  And yet, each Saturday they showed up and shared so much with me."
