October  2017
We wish our dear friends in Sonoma County strength as they recover from the fires that devastated parts of their community earlier this month. We encourage you to donate to Northern California's recovery fund to help them restore the homes, businesses, and beauty lost in the fires. Thank you.
Is your community engaging in conversations about talent development or alignment? If so, you are not alone. Communities large and small, with populations growing and slowing, are all facing issues when it comes to talent.
The term "Talent Alignment" points to the goal of ensuring local workers develop the skills needed by your employers. A gap analysis will show how well you are doing by comparing the pipeline of skills with future annual job openings. But, achieving talent alignment requires more than just an analysis.

Headlight Data's Monthly Economic Scorecard for metros has been updated, and now includes data up to September 2017. October was a busy month for Avalanche, and our clients kept busy by winning awards, making national business climate and quality of life rankings, or advancing their organization.

Estes Park EDC was given an EDIE award for "Best Small Community of the Year" by the Economic Development Council of Colorado. Awards were judged based on community demonstrated support for economic development, long-term planning and investment in the community, and undertaking a special project within the past year. Congrats Estes Park EDC!

Once agin, we see our clients topping rankings of all kinds! 4 clients made TIME's list of the Most Up-and-Coming Cities in America. Based on economic data points from Yelp, the top cities were chosen based on a variety of factors like health & medical, nightlife, and business climate. Charlotte  topped the list at #1, with Jacksonville  right behind at #2, Charleston  at #5, and Houston  at #10.  Amarillo is #1 on Entrepreneur's List of the Best Cities to Be Your Own Boss. Amarillo is the best city to be self employed based on housing costs, annual income, and the overall business climate. Half of Business Insider's list of great places to live for  millennials included clients! Provo came in at #2, Columbus at #5, Charleston at #6, Oklahoma City at #8, and last but not least, Houston at #9. Our clients are continually proving that we work with some of the best economies in the nation, and we're so thrilled to see them nationally recognized!

Jonesboro Unlimited, the economic development arm of the Jonesboro Regional Chamber, hired a new VP of Economic Development and new Director of Communications. We're excited to see what the new team members bring to Jonesboro Unlimited, and we're certain they will help Jonesboro become even more prosperous.
The workforce analysis we conducted for the City of Georgetown was featured in Community Impact. The article highlights major findings from the workforce analysis, covering topics such as inflow and outflow of talent, workforce demographics, and recruitment.

The Triad Business Journal reported on the Talent Alignment Strategy that we and CAEL are conducting for the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the Piedmont Triad Partnership. The article provides a quick over of our talent study, plus a link to participate in our regional survey.

Avalanche spent much of October on the road, and we saw so many cool things along the way! Our first trip was to Sonoma County, where we continued to gather stakeholder input for our economic development strategy. Turns out Sonoma County is also the second home of Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts characters (hence the rainbow Snoopy). Our first ever visit to Sandoval County to begin our Target Industry Study coincided with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Our final trip of the month took us to Indianapolis, where Noelle put the "I" in "Indy". We spent more time meeting with stakeholders as we continue developing our Marketing and Branding project for Indianapolis, and we got the chance to explore the Indianapolis City Market.

Here are a few snapshots of Avalanche in action:
