Many friends and residents of Cape Cod think Fall is the best time of year to visit the Cape. Our roads and attractions are less crowded and the best of everything tends to prevail after Labor Day.  It is the perfect time to take a tour of the Museum and visit the beautiful grounds of the Homestead. We are now looking forward to our 2016 Autumn Gathering at the Benjamin Nye Homestead and Museum on Saturday, October 22nd, 12-4 PM.
This year the Gathering will feature a museum exhibit on local shoe making in East Sandwich, including some of the actual shoes made across the street from our Homestead in the 1800s. Peter Oakley, the Resident Shoemaker of Old Sturbridge Village, will be on hand to demonstrate the process of making shoes by hand. Docents in period clothing will guide you through the Homestead, will demonstrate the art of spinning yarn, and cooking in our 18th century kitchen's hearth.
In the Grange Hall will be an Artisans Craft Fair, featuring beautiful and useful items locally made.  Nye Association books and merchandise will also be for sale, and our President and genealogist Judy Hendy will be there with her laptop to help you with genealogical questions.
We also invite you to explore the grounds - the millpond, swans, quick-flowing stream, the pools, fish ladder, meadow and the observation platform overlooking the marsh.  We hope that you can join us at the 7th annual Autumn Gathering!

Joseph Hoxie - Shoe Maker, Good Neighbor

For much of the 1800s, the Nye's who lived in our Homestead & Museum were neighbors with Joseph Hoxie 3rd, who lived right across the street. Deacon Silvanus Nye, his son Samuel, and his son Samuel all carried on business transactions of all sorts with Joseph (1798-1891), who was a Quaker farmer and shoemaker. There is ample evidence to suggest that he and his wife Mary, were also much appreciated as neighbors and all around helpful people. This season we set up a special exhibit: Local Shoe Making, and we were fortunate in being able to display a remarkable collection of Joseph Hoxie's shoe trade. The collection is on loan to us from the Sandwich glass Museum, who has owned it for over 100 years.
The collection includes Joseph's shoemaker's bench, many tools, shoe lasts, a sign, and even 11 shoes actually made by him. All of this was carefully preserved by his family, and donated to the Sandwich historical Society.
Our Museum season is about to end, but you can see the exhibit if you come to the autumn gathering October 22nd, 12-4 PM. A special treat will be a demonstration of shoemaking by Peter Oakley of Old Sturbridge Village, working in the same way that Joseph Hoxie once did.
