From Our Landscape Architect:

"Gardening for Halloween!"
by Janielle Guzinski

I've written before about how October is one of my favorite months here in Galveston.  The heat has broken; we are not into the cold, winter rains, and the seawall is actually a pleasure to drive.  And, with a whole month to plan, there are a great many things you can do in a Galveston garden for Halloween.  Here are some of my favorite suggestions:

Halloween or Fall-Themed Plants
  • Snapdragons/pansies come in orange tones and petunias/violas exist in dark purple to near black.
  • Pots and planters are easy to create with lime green sweet potato vine plus purple and orange flowers.  The sweet potato vine won't last all winter but it would be great for a Halloween porch.
  • Crotons are automatically Halloween/fall looking.  They can be planted in the yard or in pots, and come in many different varieties and leaf shapes/colors.  They even hold up to salt very well.
  • Certain succulents also have orange and bronze tones.  And a Crown-of-Thorns draped in cobwebbing is very creepy and dangerous looking.

Cut plants and branches to dry
  • If you have any summer plants with interesting shapes or shrubs with interesting branches, those can be cut and dried for later use.
  • A coat of glitter spray paint will make any branch instant decoration.
  • It's more fall than Halloween, but dried out palm fronds are very harvest-like.

Decorate your garden or porch or home
  • Shop in our gift shop for some perfect Halloween themed items.
  • Our decorator in the store makes amazing Halloween wreaths and other themed arrangements.
  • The artificial succulents are amazing in pumpkins!
  • There are homemade Halloween decorations that don't damage your yard.  Like using cotton or bamboo quilt batting to make your own cobwebs.
  • Certain sprays and glitters are plant safe and biodegradable so they can be used in your garden as well.

Have fun and have a safe Halloween!
