From Our Landscape Architect:

"Halloween in the Garden!"
by Janielle Guzinski

October is a month where you can have lots of fun in your yard.  It is one of my favorite months here in Galveston.  The heat has broken, we are not into the cold, winter rains, and the seawall is actually a pleasure to drive.  And then, of course, there is Halloween.  With a whole month to plan, there are a great many things you can do in a Galveston garden for Halloween.

Plant themed seasonal color or fall plants
  • Snapdragons and pansies both come in bronze/orange colors
  • Petunias and violas exist in dark purple to near black
  • For a less shocking look, maybe violet alyssum instead of white with mixed snapdragons behind
  • Pots and planters are easy to create with creeping jenny or sweet potato vine and purple or bronze flowers.  The sweet potato vine won't last all winter but it would be great for a Halloween porch.
  • Crotons are automatically Halloween/fall looking.  They can be planted in the yard or in pots, and come in many different varieties and leaf shapes/colors.

Cut plants and branches to dry
  • If you have any summer plants with interesting shapes or shrubs with interesting branches, those can be cut and dried for later use.
  • A coat of glitter spray paint will make any branch instant decoration.

Decorate your garden
  • Shop in our gift shop for some perfect Halloween themed items
  • Our decorator in the store makes amazing Halloween wreathes and other themed arrangements
  • There are homemade Halloween decorations that don't damage your yard.  Like using cotton or bamboo batting to make your own cobwebs.
  • Certain sprays and glitters are plant safe and biodegradable so they can be used in your garden as well.

Have fun and have a safe Halloween!
