Slow Food Philadelphia

Slow Food is a non-profit member supported International movement, founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people's dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.

Greetings!

We were honored to host Paolo Di Croce our Slow Food International Executive Director here in Philadelphia a few weeks back.  Thanks to your generosity we raised $500 as a donation for Coalition Against Hunger a grassroots organization headed by Carey Morgan that provides food to those in need in our community.

Paolo gave us an inspirational speech on the value of good, clean, and fair food and showed a video of a Terra Madre Program that Slow Food International has been spearheading "A Thousand Gardens in Africa". The project is working toward creating vegetable gardens in schools and villages throughout Africa.  To learn more about this project and how you can donate go to www.slowfood.com/donate/pagine/eng/progetti.lasso.

Dinner Event
Sunday, October 23rd, at 5:30pm
Alba Restaurant

Back in 1999, Slow Food Philadelphia became a reality thanks to the vision of our founder, Hansjakob Werlen.  Hansjakob has represented us in the International arena and will hopefully be generous and share a story or two of his great work.  We have also posted an interview with Hansjakob on Slow Food from WHYY Friday Arts.  It has been my honor to succeed him in leadership and with the help of our longtime partner and chef Sean Weinberg, we will be honoring him at Alba Restaurant, 7 West King Street, in Malvern on Sunday, October 23rd, at 5:30pm.  I recommend you make reservations early by calling the restaurant at 610-644-4009.

Cost of the dinner is $65 (plus tax and tip) along with an optional wine pairing for $30.
We have posted this outstanding Piedmontese menu (just to tease you the entrée is Wood Roasted Braised Lamb) on our website along with the wines that are paired with the menu.  This is a set menu so please let them know if you have any dietary requests in advance when making the reservation.
Also coming up...
Our next seminar is Wednesday, October 12th at the Restaurant School - Understanding of Food & Wine Terms hosted by author and lecturer Dr. Solomon Katz and Joe Brandolo.  Along with a video presentation, wine and cheese tasting, we will try to make sense of many of the food terms we throw around every day including sustainable, biodynamic, organic, free range, no hormone, grass fed, humanely raised and how our past is now our future trying to eliminate GMO's and chemicals.  $20 and reservations should be made...

Keeping you informed...
Thanks to an awareness project spearheaded by Harvest Local Foods owner Mary Ann Ford and her team, our local food partners are learning more about the concerns and efforts to aid farm labor here in our region.  As members of Slow Food we are concerned about where our food comes from and farm labor is a concern.  Although many of the local farmers you and I support are not part of the industrial machinery, it is important since we are in the middle of an agricultural breadbasket that we try to make you aware of people who are trying to make a difference locally through educating workers and defending their worker rights.
