October 2013 VOLUNTEER NEWSLETTER
Dear Volunteers,

Happy Girl Scout New Year! Troops are forming and weekend activities, such as the Healthy Promise: Just Dance event, are coming up.

Even as you reconnect with your girls, we encourage you to exercise your role in the governance of Girl Scouts through our delegate system. This year we'll be asking delegates for feedback on council strategic planning, volunteer money management and outstanding candidates for our Board and its committees.

Here's what's coming up:

Council Governance

If it has not done so already, your Girl Scout Community should elect its delegates to attend this month:

  • Delegate Orientation Webinar - Wed., Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.

National Governance

The Girl Scouts of the USA National Council Session will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, Oct. 16-19, 2014.

Members of GSHPA ages 14 and above are eligible to represent our council as National Delegates at this convention. National Delegate applications are due on December 31, 2013 and can be found here. Please encourage older girls and leading adult volunteers to apply. The Board Development Committee will select the slate of National Delegates for election at GSHPA's 2014 Annual Meeting.

Thank you for taking the time to consider these governance opportunities and have a fun and happy fall Girl Scout season.

New Girl Scout Year = Renewed Commitment to Healthy Promise

With the start of a new Girl Scout year, comes the start of the second year of GSHPA's very own Healthy Promise initiative - a council-wide collection of signature programming focused on increasing activity levels of our members and improving the food choices we make each and every day. This year's line-up of events and activities should keep everyone moving and engaged. Here's what's in store for your troop this year:

Healthy Promise Guide Books - Year 2

As a troop leader, you are encouraged to incorporate Healthy Promise-themed activities into your regular troop meetings from our very own Healthy Promise Guide Books. This free grade-level specific resource is available while supplies last for every troop leader to encourage their girls to get moving while also making healthier food choices. While completion of all of the activities is tied to a Healthy Promise-specific patch for each girl available for purchase online or in our council store, these same activities also align with as many as three* of the official Girl Scout badges included within the Girls' Guide to Girl Scouting for each of the grade levels. *Please note that the number of badges may vary depending on the grade level.

To request your free copy of the Healthy Promise Guide Book, click on your troop's grade level below and follow the instructions. Supplies are limited to one book per troop and the request for the book must be made by the troop leader (also known as the 01).

Healthy Promise Video Chats Return

You watch Good Morning America, Morning Joe, New Day, The Today Show and CBS This Morning live from the comfort of your home, right? Well imagine if the members of your troop had the opportunity to watch a live show from the comfort of their own homes while using their computers all while actually participating in the conversation with the hosts and their fellow participants via a secure online chat - wouldn't that be cool? Well wait no longer! GSHPA is excited to offer a series of what we're calling Healthy Promise Video Chats for Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors again this Fall where they do exactly that!

In November, we kickoff a series featuring the Teen Battle Chefs from Spoutwood Farm from Glen Rock, PA. Tune-in to this live show and watch the chefs dish up healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner options along with cooking tips and tricks. Chat with the chefs during the show, ask questions and be ready to answer pop-quiz questions. A few lucky home viewers will win prizes for participating!

Each Healthy Promise Video Chat will stream live to Girl Scouts in central and northeastern Pennsylvania via a secure internet service. Participants will watch the show from home on a personal computer or any electronic device that connects to the internet and plays video. Pre-registration and a password will be required for viewing. Each episode will air from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. The series will end in a cooking competition and Girl Scouts will vote on the winning recipe. New this year, a different Healthy Promise event patch for each Video Chat you attend! Register for all four episodes and get the whole collection. Video Chats are designed for Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Girl Scouts. Episodes cost $6 per girl viewer. The cost includes a patch. There is no cost for an adult viewer watching with a girl.

Episode 1: Breakfast Bloopers

In the first episode of the series, the Teen Battle Chefs will share a recipe for a breakfast yogurt parfait. The chefs will also demonstrate the proper ways to handle foods and challenge viewers to catch their mistakes as they happen! In addition to earning a Healthy Promise event patch for participating in this Video Chat, Junior Girl Scouts will find that the show compliments the activities in the Simple Meals badge.

Episode 1 will air Wednesday, November 13, 2013 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Episode 2: Make Your Plate MyPlate!

During the second Healthy Promise Video Chat, the Teen Battle Chefs get cooking with a well-balanced, lunch quesadilla recipe. Get every food group at every meal once you know how to cook with MyPlate, the USDA's recommended way to plan meals that contain servings of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy products. Be ready for a food group quiz! In addition to earning a Healthy Promise event patch for participating in this Video Chat, Cadettes working on the New Cuisines badge will enjoy this new twist on a Mexican favorite.

Episode 2 will air Wednesday, December 11, 2013 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Episode 3: Make Way for New Cuisines!

Be ready to kick it up a notch during the third Healthy Promise Video Chat! The Teen Battle Chefs will be sharing a Caribbean Salsa recipe that is sweet than spicy. The chefs will also demonstrate knife skills and review the best ways to chop the fruits and veggies included in this dish. Salsa is a good way to be sure you eat a rainbow of fresh foods even during the cold winter months. Seniors completing the Locavore Badge will want to tuck this recipe away for the summer when Pennsylvania produce is plentiful! Cadettes seeking regional recipes and perfecting their chopping skills might find this episode especially interesting.

Episode 3 will air Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Episode 4: The Final Battle

In the fourth and final episode, two teams of Teen Chefs will "battle" it out while cooking dinner recipes with mystery ingredients. Home viewers will get to score the teams on their overall presentation and use of the mystery ingredient. Please join us and learn how to make two healthy meals with surprising ingredients!

Episode 4 will air Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
