New Research Department at Woods

We are pleased to announce the launching of the Woods College Research
Department
( formal name to follow),  which will serve as a site for fellows across various disciplines within the Woods undergraduate and especially
our graduate  programs . This will allow fellows and faculty even  greater  access to Boston College's premier research facilities.

We are happy to welcome our inaugural Fellow, Prof. Manos Hatzimalonas, who joins us from Rhodes, Greece. Prof. Hatzimalonas is currently the Executive Director of the The Philotimo Foundation, a non-profit social innovation center dedicated to the exploration of the understudied human emotional and cognitive state of philotimo as a platform for positive social change.

Welcome, Professor Hatzimalonas!
 October Undergraduate Student Spotlight:

Muhammad Hassan '21, of the United Arab Emirates, is currently majoring in Political Science at the Woods College. He is grateful for his experience at BC thus far and plans to use what he learns for the betterment of others:

"It has really become clear to me that I am rebuilding my  life and it is all because of Woods College. I also get to go to St. Ignatius for my spiritual life and am taking the RCIA classes this fall. The Catholic community has been incredibly merciful and compassionate to me."

"I would like to go to BC Law and become an attorney specializing in human rights and would like to help Syrian refugees, Middle Eastern Christians and LGBT people."

Muhammad recently shared this relevant article on Muslim-Arabs converting to Christianity.

October Graduate Student Spotlight:

Elliot Tobin, graduated from MIT in May, and joined the MS in Applied Economics graduate program this fall.

"BC's Applied Economics Program is an ideal way to extend the skills I learned during my undergraduate career, where I earned B.S. degrees in Economics and Management from MIT (Class of 2017).

Between my full time job as product manager for Staples eCommerce and the Applied Economics Program, I am learning skills that will not only prepare me for a successful career, but also keep my career options open-from entrepreneurship, to finance to Ph.D. programs. Lastly, this program's 6:30 p.m. classes make it convenient to get to class as a student who is working full time."

We would like to extend good luck and well wishes to both Eliot and Muhammad as they continue their academic endeavors!

Sarah Says
A piece of advice from long term BC Woods College employee, Sarah  Piepgrass,
Academic & Student Services Specialist:

EYES ON THE PRIZE
Pace yourself for the long run. It's never easy to fit 30 hours of work into a 24-hour day, so try to and make a plan - decide where in your day and week you can make time for schoolwork, and do your best to stick to that schedule. Remember that a great strategy is to break large tasks into smaller, manageable amounts (after all, 250 pages broken down over 7 days is only 35 pages per day).

You are not the first working/parenting student to do college at night, but the fact is that you signed up for this - because you KNOW that there is a huge long term benefit in getting your college degree (a fact borne out by extensive research). BUT - if you truly cannot handle your workload, it may sometimes be necessary to drop a course. It will take you longer to graduate, but you'll save your sanity (and your GPA) in the process.
