HELP US MEET THE WILDER GREEN FUND CHALLENGE!

Thanks to the support of generous donors who share the Harwood's belief in the arts, the Museum's Art in the Schools program engages thousands of children every year with the Harwood's collections and exhibitions.  One of those donors, the Wilder Green Fund, has issued a challenge!  The Fund will extend a $5,000 grant to the Art in the Schools program if those funds are matched by other donors.  At this point, we need to raise an additional $2,840 to meet this challenge.

Please bring us closer to our fundraising goal by making a donation in any amount.  Every gift counts!

For more information about this challenge grant, please contact Harwood Museum of Art Director of Development Juniper Manley at [email protected] or 575.758.9826 x 116

Thank you for helping to keep art in the lives of Taos' children!

WELCOME EXHIBITIONS MANAGER LIZ NEELY!

Liz Neely
Please join us in welcoming Exhibitions Manager Liz Neely! Liz will oversee the planning, administration and installation of all of the Harwood's exhibitions.  She brings to us seventeen years experience working with the Art Institute of Chicago, most recently as Director of Digital Information and Access.  In that capacity Liz directed projects focusing on enhancing visitor experience in the AIC's exhibitions, digital publishing, and innovation in education and collection management. She managed several strategic multi-year projects, including an online scholarly catalogue initiative funded by the Getty Foundation. Liz is active in the national museum field, serving as Vice President/President-Elect on the Museum Computer Network Board of Directors and on the executive committee for the New Media Consortium Board.  Given the Harwood's recent conversion to the TMS collections management system, which has robust Exhibitions, Loans and Shipping modules through which our exhibitions will be managed, we are remarkably fortunate to bring someone with Liz's expertise on board.

Last but definitely not least, Liz has jumped right into Taos' creative community!  She was one of the designers featured in July's Sacred Geo multi-media event created by the Runway Vigilantes, and she contributed to last month's fabulous Paseo event.

Welcome, Liz!

AAM ACCREDITATION

Last year the Harwood Museum of Art achieved Core Documents Verification from the American Alliance of Museums, a first step towards AAM accreditation. In August we learned that AAM was accepting applications for new accreditation for the first time since 2010. And last month we learned that the Harwood's application has been accepted. The Museum's Governing Board and staff are now hard at work on a self-study due to AAM on January 15. We'll keep you posted on our progress!

We appreciate your comments, and hope that they will encourage new museum guests to visit us as well. Thank you for your time - we look forward to seeing you again soon!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Susan Longhenry

Dear Friends,

We're still exhilarated by the experience of greeting 1,900 people over the course of three days last month in celebration of the Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool suite of exhibitions!  What a remarkable celebration of creativity, community, and everything else that makes Northern New Mexico such an extraordinary place.   I extend my heartfelt thanks to the remarkable consortium of artists, curators, donors, volunteers, and staff members who brought this fantastic project to life.

Our celebration continues this month with two films related to Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool, both featuring post-screening discussions with the filmmakers.  We're also reprising our very popular Halloween at the Harwood Community Day, and partnering with SOMOS and the John Donald Robb Musical Trust on programs exploring, respectively, young writers and Hispanic Folk Music.

See you at the Harwood!

Saturday, October 11 - 7:00 p.m.

Presented in conjunction with
Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool, this film delivers insight into multiple American counter-cultures by following the great American artist and underground legend Robert Williams. From Hot Rods to Punk and Metal, from LSD to the top of the art world, the influential paintings of Robert Williams defied categorization until they became their own art movement.  The screening will be followed by a talk with Mr. Bitchin's co-director and producer Nancye Ferguson.  This program is supported in part by La Posada de Taos Bed & Breakfast.

FILM: EVERYTHING COMES FROM THE STREETS: A DOCUMENTARY ON THE ORIGINS AND HISTORY OF LOWRIDING IN SAN DIEGO
Friday, October 17 - 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, October 18 - 1:00 p.m.

This film, also presented in conjunction with
Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool, traces the early roots and history of lowriding in San Diego and the borderlands, featuring the men and women who pioneered and shaped the Mexican-American movement defined by self-expression and cultural ingenuity. The film draws on intimate interviews, archival footage and rare old home movies and photographs unearthed during the making of the film to present an engaging and rich story covering nearly 30 years of lowriding, from the 1950s to the early 1980s. This inspiring portrait of a community determined by creative self-expression and cultural preservation explores how identity and collective strength originate in the streets.  Saturday's screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmakers Alberto Pulido and Rigoberto Reyes. This program is supported in part by Palacio de Marquesa.
