Congrats to Mater Academy's  Lions for winning the 2nd annual "Commissioners Cup"

Congratulations to Mater Academy's football team for winning the 2nd annual "Commissioners Cup" against Westland Hialeah High's Wildcats on October 23 at Traz Powell Stadium. However, both teams were winners since both schools received a donation of $1,000 to their school's athletic department. Last year the Lions also won the first annual "Commissioners Cup."  Final score was Mater 48-Westland 6. Great job LIONS!!!

Legislation News

Road impact fees to be used for mass transit projects
Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation to make it easier for the County to use road impact fees for mass transit improvements. The ordinance received a positive recommendation from the Transit and Mobility Services Committee on October 14, and is scheduled for a vote by the full Board of County Commissioners on November 3. Currently, developers pay the County road impact fees whenever new projects are built. Those funds are now spent almost entirely on road construction. Using road impact fees for public transportation is currently restricted to areas south or east of the Palmetto Expressway and must go through additional administration hurdles to get approved. The proposed legislation would eliminate those restrictions.

Recycling Program at Miami International Airport and PortMiami
Commissioner Diaz sponsored MIA legislation and PortMiami legislation to establish a recycling program for travelers at Miami International Airport and PortMiami.

Banning drones near County airports
Citing the increasing availability and use of drones by the general public and the potential risks to aircraft, Commissioner Diaz sponsored an ordinance to ban the use of drones above any County airport or within one mile of a County airport runway. The Federal Aviation Administration has documented 678 instances nationwide of aircraft in flight encountering drones and is currently in the process of developing a system to require owners to register their drones, also known as Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

Two other schools in Miami-Dade also received the 2015 National Blue Ribbon School award, which belong in District 9 Commissioner Dennis c. Moss and District 5 Bruno A. Barreiro.
