I
n honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we would like to take this opportunity to offer some hope all those affected by this life altering disease. In her own words by Mrs. Karen Blackmell, Breast Cancer Survivor.

On October 8, 2015 I woke up feeling sick and feeling as if I had a fever. I remember my breast feeling very tender and sore. As I examined my breast I felt a lump which was painful to touch. I thought to myself, “I know what this is; I’ve had this problem before. It’s infected milk ducts.” I also thought I should make an appointment with my OB GYN to get this checked out. I called to make an appointment with my OB GYN and I was pretty sure I knew what it was.
I was examined by my OB GYN and she said to me, “Karen, the lump you found you were right, its infected milk ducts, but I see something suspicious.” She sent me to get a mammogram, biopsy, and an ultra sound.
While I waited for the results, I was also scheduled for a full knee replacement on November 10, 2015. While in the hospital recovering from the full knee replacement, I was told that my results were in and I had stage 2 breast cancer; I was to follow up with the surgeon. After my follow- up appointment with the surgeon, I was scheduled to have a lumpectomy on December 17, 2015. I had to receive two major surgeries within a little more than a month. My surgery was successful and I was scheduled to begin chemotherapy and radiation treatment early 2016. I have completed all of my treatments and doing very well. It is so important to do the self examination and get your mammogram. I believe early detection is important because it saves lives.
I want to send a special thanks to my OB GYN Dr. Shelly Dunson-Allen; she found the cancerous tumor and the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, the infusion center, my oncologist, my surgeon, my nurses and all of those who helped me through this process.
