Message from Jim Swinkola, CEO, Grandfather Home for Children

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,"

states Jeremiah 29:11.

Those words of Scripture are securely mounted at the base of the Grandfather Home for Children Centennial Cross. This cross appropriately is the welcoming symbol for all who drive onto the Hayes Campus in Banner Elk. It is visible to the children each day as they walk from their cottages to Grandfather Academy.

Carved out of a maple tree that stood for more than 100 years, the Centennial Cross serves as a symbol of inspiration for the children under our care. The top of the tree was significantly damaged by storms and lightning in past years, but the decision was made not to discard the tree. The decision was made to reshape a portion of the trunk into a symbol of strength and hope.

When 16-year-old Alexis offered the closing prayer during the dedication of the Centennial Cross, she reminded us that the children on the Hayes Campus also had been damaged by the emotional storms of past abuse and neglect. The resulting trauma necessitated their placement for mental health treatment.

For Alexis, she has found hope and a future at Grandfather Home. She has been touched by God's love and realizing the Lord's plan to prosper her.

Much like the damaged maple tree, the children of Grandfather Home are reshaped. The damage from past storms is removed, permitting them to stand tall and strong.

When you next visit the Hayes Campus of Grandfather Home for Children, I ask that you stop at the Centennial Cross. Read the Scripture and say a prayer that all children under our care will realize hope and bright future.
