OkEq Legislative Alerts |
Oklahomans for Equality calls upon all fair minded Oklahomans to contact your state representatives and senators and ask them not to support the following:
House Bill 1125 would strip county court clerks of their duty of issuing marriage licenses. It would allow clergy to issue marriage "certificates," but any couple not married during a religious ceremony could have only a "common-law" marriage. Rep. Todd Russ of District 55 introduced the bill under the guise of protecting elected officials' religious freedoms. The bill has passed out of committee and now goes to the full House for consideration.
Rep. David Brumbaugh has put forth House Bill 1007, which targets same-sex couples wishing to be married and seeks to protect clergy persons who do not wish to or cannot perform weddings for same-sex couples. Under present Oklahoma law, only clergy persons willing and able to perform same-sex weddings are allowed to. Under existing law, no one is forced to perform same-sex weddings. The bill has passed the House and now goes to the Senate.
House Bill 159
8, which Rep. Sally Kern filed as the Freedom to Obtain Conversion Therapy Act but passed through committee as the Parental and Family Rights in Counseling Protection Act, would codify the right to obtain certain counseling or conversion therapy; prevent certain infringement by the state; and protect mental health providers who engage in sexual-orientation or gender-identity change efforts with a child. It now goes to the full House.
House Bill 1599, the Preservation of Sovereignty and Marriage Act by Rep. Sally Kern, would prohibit the use of public funds for any activity licensing or supporting same-sex marriage and would prohibit public employees from recognizing same-sex marriage licenses. It has passed out of committee and goes to the full House. It has passed a committee and goes to the full House.
Rep. Chuck Strohm, R-Jenks, inserted language into House Bill 1371, the Oklahoma Religious Freedom Act, on Monday, and it passed a commi
t
tee on Tuesday. Strohm says it is intended to protect
small businesses that do not want to provide services for marriages to which the business owner objects on religious grounds. The measure also says no state or local government could intervene if such services were denied. This bill passed out of committee on Tuesday and now is before the full House.
Senate Bill 788 by Sen. Dan Newberry, no judge or religious officiant would be required to perform a marriage that violates his or her religious beliefs. It is in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Take Action: Oklahomans for Equality urges you to contact House Floor Leader Jason Nelson, 405-557-7335, and House Majority Floor Leader Charles Ortega, 405-557-7369, to urge them not to bring House Bills 1007, 1125, 1598, 1599 or 1371 to the House floor for a vote. Contact Senate Sen. Brian Bingman, President Pro Tempore (405) 521-5565 and Sen. Mike Schulz, Majority Floor Leader (405) 521-5612 and ask that Senate Bill 788 and 21 not be allowed a vote on the Senate floor.
Find your local legislator and
let them know that these attacks are not acceptable.

Oklahomans for Equality invites high school youth, counselors and teachers to join us for OkEq's LGBTQ High School Youth Day at the Capitol to address concerns about Rep. Sally Kern's HB 1598. Neill Equality Center, plus breakfast and lunch, will be provided. Must RSVP in advance. Contact Oklahomans for Equality Executive Director Toby Jenkins at [email protected].
