Monthly Medical Memo
Common Hip Injuries in Athletes

Athletes who participate in contact sports are at risk for several common hip injuries. Falling hard on ice or the ground, running, skating, repeated heavy impact and overuse can lead to a hip injury. Most injuries are not career-enders, but all need time and attention before returning to practice or competition.

"Munson Outpatient Physical Therapy has an excellent team of physical therapists with a vast amount of experience and knowledge with sports and sports injuries," said Munson Medical Center Physical Therapist Kelley Nash, DPT. "We are here to get you back to your sport as safely and quickly as possible."

Here are some injuries to watch out for:
  • Groin and hamstring strain
    • Most muscle strains will resolve with rest and gentle stretching. If not resolving in a reasonable period of time, physical therapy is recommended.
  • Hip pointer injury
    • Extremely painful injury to the iliac crest due to a direct blow (helmet, shoulder, or fall).
    • Most heal with conservative treatment including RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) initially, followed by gentle stretching and gradual return to activity.
  • Stress fracture
    • Athlete will complain of an ache in their groin that occurs with activity and relieved with rest.
    • Treatment includes rest from the activity that is causing pain. May need crutches if walking is painful. Physical therapy to safely strengthen muscles of hip and pelvis. If fracture is at risk of displacing, surgery may be needed.
  • Labral tear
    • Sudden pain in the hip followed by groin pain, clicking and snapping of the hip, and limitations in available motion, commonly associated with sudden, twisting maneuvers.
    • Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory meds, and physical therapy to restore range of motion and strengthen muscles around the hip.
  • Osteitis pubis
    • Inflammation of the pubic symphysis in front of the pelvis.
    • Treatment includes rest and physical therapy.
  • Sports hernias
    • Symptoms include pain in lower abdomen or groin that is worse with running, cutting, bending forward, and sometimes even coughing.
    • Conservative treatment includes rest, ice, and physical therapy to strengthen the muscles of the pelvis and abdomen;  if these measures do not relieve symptoms, surgery may be recommended.
When to Seek Medical Attention
  • Inability to walk on the injured leg
  • Inability to move the leg or hip
  • Intense pain
  • Sudden swelling
  • A joint that appears deformed

What a Physical Therapist Will Do
  • Evaluate the hip joint and musculature, as well as the joints above and below to determine the best treatment for the fastest recovery.
  • Help restore movement, strength, and muscle balance to allow you to return to your sport safely.
  • Educate you on prevention and self-management.
