City of Delray Beach to Host Annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 28
 
Mayor Shelly Petrolia welcomes the community to join the City of Delray Beach and the American Legion Post 65 in honoring the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the Armed Forces this Memorial Day at 9:30 am at the Delray Beach Memorial Gardens (700 SW 8th Ave).
 
"Memorial Day is a special occasion to pay tribute and honor those who courageously gave their lives to uphold the freedoms we all enjoy," said Mayor Shelly Petrolia. "We are grateful to host this important tradition that brings families and friends together to commemorate our fallen heroes."
 
Mayor Shelly Petrolia, the American Legion Post 65 and the Boy Scouts of America Pack 301 are among the presenters for the Memorial Day ceremony.

1.  The Delray Beach Tourism Roundtable on May 22nd included important information and updates from Delray Beach Markeitng Cooperative, VisitFlorida and Discover the Palm Beaches.  The Summer Tourism Roundtable date will be announced soon.
  • Florida welcomed 117 million visitors in 2017.  Tourism accounts for 1.4 million jobs in Florida, $111 billion in economic impact and $1.6 billion in local tax revenue.
  • Around 50 million people travel between Miami and Orlando annually.
  • Brightline train service will start service between Miami and Orlando in 2021.
  • About 25 million deplaned in south Florida.
    • Miami - 11 mn
    • Ft Lauderdale - 9 mn
    • PBI - 3mn
  • Palm Beach County welcomed 7.9 million visitors for $7.2 billion in economic impact
  • Delray Beach has about 1141 rooms with an Average Daily Rate (ADR) of $243 and average annual Occupancy Rate of 76.5%.  This equates to about $68 million in economic impact in hotel nights alone, not including spending at shops, restaurants and attractions.
  • New inventory is coming online in Delray Beach in the near future.
    • The Ray  - Pineapple Grove boutique hotel (143 rooms, 3 restaurants, 300 person banquet space)
    • Kolter - Northbound Federal Highway near the Marina district - (Courtyard Marriott)
    • Aloft - Southbound Federal Highway - Opening in October (122 rooms, 35 condos)
  • The Tourism Development Council collects the bed tax charged by all PBC hotels ($51 million). It is divided up among several agencies including:
    • Discover the Palm Beaches - $17m
    • The Cultural Council of the Palm Beaches
    • The Sports Commission
    • The Film & TV Commission
    • Environmental Resource Management - (ERM)- beaches
2. A Seminar held at the Chamber on May 24th in partnership with the City of Delray Beach, the Office of Economic Development and the Community Redevelopment Authority addressed "Keep it Local" - funding assistance, procurement opportunities, and City Jobs.  Click Here for the presentation

Delray Beach Fire Rescue Update
Congratulations to the participants of the 23rd Annual Ocean Mile Swim!  Check out the start of the race here with commentary by Delray Beach Ocean Rescue Chief Phil Wotton.

Delray Beach Fire-Rescue (DBFR) believes that we should maintain a strong focus on preventative health, life safety and injury prevention education as well as disaster preparedness in the community. Our Community Health and Preparedness Program is aimed at increasing our efforts in the area of health and wellness.  Our goal is to reduce the number of acute medical/injury emergencies in our community.
 
Our City of Delray Beach Fire-Rescue Firefighter/Paramedics are available on a limited schedule to come out to your location to present to a Civic Group, Homeowners Association, Church, School, or other organization and speak about issues that are directly impacting our community related to health, wellness, and injury prevention. Please take a moment to review the topics and choose which one would be best for your group.
 
Educational Topics Include:
·         Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) 
·         Diabetes
·         Stroke
·         Falls Prevention
·         Heart Attack
·         Importance of CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
·         Hurricane Preparedness
·         Fire Safety
