A message from Assembly Member O'Donnell on the 15th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks.

September 11, 2016

Dear Neighbor,

Today marks the 15th anniversary of a tremendous loss of life in our city and a national tragedy. The events of September 11th 2001 remain etched in our memories as we commemorate those who lost their lives in the attacks on New York, Washington D.C, and Pennsylvania. We thank the brave men and women who selflessly served, protected, and defended us in the face of terrorism. We support our friends, our families, and our neighbors in remembering the loved ones lost.

The attacks still evoke profound grief, sadness, and anger. They continue to raise questions of how to ensure that tolerance and understanding supersede prejudice and hate. In our response to acts of hate it is important that we embrace our shared humanity as a way to overcome our grief, rather than foment intolerance or accentuate what makes us different from one another.

Over the last fifteen years, New Yorkers have demonstrated extraordinary courage to rebuild. Instead of turning to violence and blame, New Yorkers have come together to say that our city stands above the hate. We must continue to view the diversity in our communities as something that makes New York City extraordinary. Let us honor the victims of 9/11 by standing together to assert that after fifteen years, this is still no place for hatred.

Very truly yours,

Daniel O'Donnell
