Spring has officially sprung in the WAMPO region! As you know, spring is a time of rebirth and renewal and with that great opportunity.  On April 22nd we will celebrate the 45th anniversary of Earth Day.  In keeping with the awareness sentiments of this movement, WAMPO would like to encourage citizens in our region to be aware of how travel impacts the environment.

As we enter into the warmer months the WAMPO region will be at increased risk for exceeding safe ozone levels.  Ozone levels that become too high have the potential to put our local environment and health at risk.  Did you know that cars are the main source of the Nitrogen Oxides that create ozone?

There are simple things you can do like, filling up your gas tank after 6pm and turning your car off instead of idling while stopped, that can positively impact our ozone levels.  Curious about what this means and how else you can help?  Check out these great resources from around the WAMPO region:

MOVE 2040

MOVE 2040 is the planning process for the next long range transportation plan.  In 2014, we finalized the initial vision, goals, performance measures, and investment strategy, which focused on preserving and maintaining the existing transportation system. Setting an investment strategy was a new step in the regional transportation planning process, and it was helpful in guiding the project selection phase.

The MOVE 2040 plan is expected to be finalized in July of 2015.  To learn more about MOVE 2040 please click  HERE.

We Want to Hear from You!

WAMPO wants to hear from folks about our proposed MOVE 2040 plan.  We would like to know when and what should be reported back out to you and most importantly, did we get it right?

It's not too late!  WAMPO will be engaged in a couple more outreach opportunities focused on offering the community a chance to share their feedback on the proposed plan.  Below are the remaining public meetings scheduled for April:

  • Goddard City Council 4/20/2015 at 7:00 pm - City Hall 118 N. Main, Goddard

  • Wichita City Council 4/29/2015 at 9:30 am - Wichita City Hall 455 N. Main, Wichita

If you are unable to attend please take a few minutes to tell us what you think by taking our online survey, click HERE.

2014 WAMPO Annual Report

WAMPO works closely with local governments to develop short-range and long-range transportation plans.  In addition to this we also allocate approximately $11 million of federal funds every year to high priority projects in those plans.  These projects range from resurfacing a stretch of a major roadway to transit services for the elderly and people with disabilities.   To read more about the 2014 accomplishments and funding awards please click HERE.

Federal Functional Classification

During April and May WAMPO will be carrying out an annual Federal Functional Classification review of the roadways located in the WAMPO region.  The Federal Functional Classification process identifies how roads are used in the urban and rural areas of the WAMPO region.  The classification also determines what category of funding is available for each classified road.  If you are curious about what this looks like, check out the Federal Functional Classification map by clicking on the map below:

May is Bike Month!

Bike Month is celebrated annually from coast to coast and provides us with the perfect opportunity to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more community members to give biking a try.

Whether you bike to work or school, ride to save money or time, pump those pedals to explore your community or preserve your health/environment, Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride.

The Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita, Bike Walk Wichita and Safe Kids Coalition have developed a full month of activities for the novice to the most experienced cyclists.  To learn more about the many biking activities for cyclists of any age, please visit www.bikemonthwichita.org.
