York University recently announced a $2 million grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to support the development of a global network to address infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance. GRIDD will be co-led by York University and the University of Ottawa and will include a trans-disciplinary team of researchers from the social sciences and the human, animal, and environmental health sciences.

In June 2017 the European Commission adopted the
EU One Health Action Plan against AMR.
This plan provides a framework for continued, more extensive action to reduce the emergence and spread of AMR and to increase the development and availability of new effective antimicrobials inside and outside the EU.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Telangkhedi-based Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (Mafsu) have collaborated to establish India’s first of its kind National Institute of One Health (NIOH). The University of Tennessee System has announced the creation of the UT One Health Initiative (UTOHI), an effort to enhance research collaborations across the state and region to address rapidly emerging health challenges. UTOHI will consolidate resources from across the UT System to build on the history of leadership and engagement in One Health studies within the UT Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) and the UT- Knoxville campus. Efforts to coordinate studies began in February 2019, attracting more than 50 interested faculty and scientists representing numerous departments and colleges. On November 19, 2019, the world lost to cancer a huge One Health Champion, One Health Commission Board Member Greg Bossart, DVM, PhD, Senior Vice President for Animal Health, Research, and Conservation at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. For over 3 decades his research focused on diseases in wild animals and how marine mammals were excellent sentinels of ocean and human health. He documented resurgent and emerging diseases in manatees, whales, dolphins, and birds and helped characterize the first immuno-histochemical technique for diagnosing red-tide poisoning, a neglected One Health issue, in marine mammals and birds.

Salzburg, Austria. Hosted by Global Salzburg and Ending Pandemics. Participants mapped out an action plan through 2021 and offered commitments to push this plan forward. A few examples of timeliness metrics developed through a highly interactive, iterative process include time to detect an unusual or adverse health event, time to initiation of a multi-sectoral investigation, and time to implementation of control measures. Ending Pandemics will produce a One Health framework to be openly shared and promoted globally.

The climate crisis is...a game changer for One Health, a concept that traditionally has viewed human health through the lens of veterinary medicine, focusing primarily on zoonoses and food-borne diseases, with environmental concern as a less-prominent element. The author of this editorial agrees with Paul Gibbs who has said “in the first decade of the One Health era, the concept provided the initiative, coordination, and drive to control and prevent disease in animals and people; now in the second decade, One Health needs to recognise the broader issue of Planetary Health…” That is, when viewed synergistically with the more recent notion of Planetary Health, One Health simply brings it all together, providing new momentum for interdisciplinary research and action.
