On November 19, 2019, the world lost to cancer a huge One Health Champion, One Health Commission Board Member Greg Bossart, DVM, PhD, Senior Vice President for Animal Health, Research, and Conservation at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. For over 3 decades his research focused on diseases in wild animals and how marine mammals were excellent sentinels of ocean and human health. He documented resurgent and emerging diseases in manatees, whales, dolphins, and birds and helped characterize the first immuno-histochemical technique for diagnosing red-tide poisoning, a neglected One Health issue, in marine mammals and birds. https://tinyurl.com/yx3tyl4j The One Health Commission and the Georgia Aquarium will soon be partnering to offer a One Health Scholarship in Greg’s honor so watch for upcoming details. You can listen to a 2017 recorded presentation ( https://tinyurl.com/usy2dme ) that he gave at Penn State University.

Salzburg, Austria. Hosted by Global Salzburg and Ending Pandemics. Participants mapped out an action plan through 2021 and offered commitments to push this plan forward. A few examples of timeliness metrics developed through a highly interactive, iterative process include time to detect an unusual or adverse health event, time to initiation of a multi-sectoral investigation, and time to implementation of control measures. Ending Pandemics will produce a One Health framework to be openly shared and promoted globally. https://tinyurl.com/txkv39z
MEDICC Review Editorial
The climate crisis is...a game changer for One Health, a concept that traditionally has viewed human health through the lens of veterinary medicine, focusing primarily on zoonoses and food-borne diseases, with environmental concern as a less-prominent element. The author of this editorial agrees with Paul Gibbs who has said “in the first decade of the One Health era, the concept provided the initiative, coordination, and drive to control and prevent disease in animals and people; now in the second decade, One Health needs to recognise the broader issue of Planetary Health…” That is, when viewed synergistically with the more recent notion of Planetary Health, One Health simply brings it all together, providing new momentum for interdisciplinary research and action. https://tinyurl.com/rvosrbq

One Health (issues) 'IN' the News!

Richard Seifman, IMPAKTER
"When we speak of “health” we usually mean “human health”. But over 70% of infectious diseases affecting “humans” are zoonotic, from animals to humans. For optimal health outcomes, we need to take into consideration human, animal, plant, and environmental health. That integrated strategy is at the heart of the “One Health” approach." https://tinyurl.com/vxzzvxc
Contagion Live
Those who require a reminder of the importance of the One Health approach need look no further than the ongoing 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak. One Health, designed to foster and streamline communication between infectious disease professionals engaged in human as well as veterinary health, is essentially where the rubber meets road when an outbreak occurs. Although we still have a lot to learn about the origins of 2019 n-CoV, it’s safe to assume that One Health protocols and principles have played, and will likely continue to play, a key role in getting the ongoing crisis under control. https://tinyurl.com/rjfcvmg
The Star, Ontario, Canada
“The current coronavirus outbreak is a sobering reminder that there is no firewall between animal and human health. Scientists believe the virus likely originated in bats and jumped to people at a wildlife market in Wuhan, China. More than 60 per cent of emerging infectious diseases come from animals, and more than 70 per cent of those from wildlife, research shows. “......“We’re just one inhabitant of the planet, although we’re overtaking it, absolutely. And we need the health of the planet,” says Ray, of the Wildlife Conservation Society Canada. “We have to be thinking about health in a much more holistic way than we have been.” https://tinyurl.com/rsy7645
Connor McCoy, BIOtechNOW Blog, January 28, 2020
Biotechnology is leading to breakthroughs for human, animal and environmental health, but is there a way we can address these outbreaks before they spread from animal to human? Yes, and the concept is called One Health.
https://tinyurl.com/s76pplu
Gregory C. Gray, US News and World Report, January 27, 2020
We know that most human emerging disease viruses first circulate in animals, yet we don’t often see them coming. "........ Hence, new collaborative partnerships must be forged between agricultural businesses and human, animal and environmental health groups so that emerging viruses can be better detected and mitigation strategies developed before a novel virus crosses over to infect man. Often, such an interdisciplinary collaboration is termed the "One Health Approach." Many institutions are calling for One Health interdisciplinary collaborations as the best approach to complex problems such as emerging viral threats". https://tinyurl.com/uanbvkh
