The World Bank has released an
'Operational Framework for Strengthening Human, Animal and Environmental Public Health Systems at their interface'
(a
One Health Operational Framework). Developed in partnership with EcoHealth Alliance, this framework provides a basis for understanding and implementing a One Health approach in global and country investments. Building on World Bank’s prior “People, Pathogens, and our Planet” reports (2012), it examines the strategic context, rationale and case for investing in One Health, provides an inventory of tools and other resources from the human health, agriculture, environment and disaster risk reduction sectors to facilitate multi-sectoral coordination. It includes technical guidance for appropriate One Health entry points and operations along the prevent-detect-respond-recover spectrum of preparedness.

Baron Soulsby of Swaffham (Lord Soulsby), who died in May 2017, was a pioneer and champion of the One Health concept. He sought to inspire colleagues and students to view animal and human medicine as one continuous health-related tapestry. The Soulsby Foundation was estab-lished by Lord Soulsby in 2016 to support talented veterinary and med-ical researchers at an early stage in their careers through competitively awarded travel fellowships. The Foundation has awarded the inaugural Soulsby Travelling Fellowships to Dr Camilla Benfield (RVC)) and Dr Andrew Stringer (NCSU CVM) to support their work in the international field of One Health. One or two Soulsby Fellowships will be awarded annually.

“
….We have long embraced a one-health paradigm at NIAID, especially in the realm of emerging and re-emerging diseases, most of which are zoonoses and must be studied in the context of the ecosystems humans share with microbes, non-human hosts, vectors, reservoirs and other actors. Many of the research efforts about which I speak and write almost daily fall under the one health rubric…”
