MIDLIFE MIDWIFE™

Since I found you, you have birthed within me new ideas, wonderful emotions (mostly happiness) and awe. I am not only in mid-life but my only child is graduating from HS and I have lost my business. I still don't know what the next chapter will be and most of the time I am afraid. You have been the calm in my storm so often and I love you for that.

The transition from Maiden and Mother to Queen and Empress can be a difficult one, fraught with hard lessons and lots of loss. It takes great determination and courage to confront and embrace the changes brought about by the midlife passage.

It can be really helpful during this confusing time to have the inspiration, advice and encouragement of a counselor/coach/mentor - someone who has been there and done that and is ready to help you do the same.

Queen Mama Donna offers upbeat, practical and ceremonial guidance for individual women and groups who want to enjoy the fruits of an enriching, influential, purposeful, passionate, and powerful maturity.

Staying Connected

Crow Flag

Hail Queens!

Time is marching on and some souls get left behind. More and more as we get older. I  have lost so many dear friends and colleagues in the last few years. This reality makes it ever more compelling to stay connected to those people and places and purposes that hold meaning for us.

There is a certain nostalgia that accompanies aging. We long for the increasingly few who knew us when. Who shared important times with us. Who had a deep impact on our being. And who we have fallen away from for the many reasons and excuses of daily life. I am surprised to find that I now quite enjoy family gatherings in Ohio that I once rebelled against and was so eager to leave behind.

A year or so ago I was compelled to seek out my dearest sister friend of old. We were close as only teenage girl BFFs can be from day one in junior high School until the day when we both started new lives. I moved to New York City to be an artist and writer and she got married in Cleveland and moved to Japan with her then military husband.

Fifty years later I found an address for her and reached out. She responded enthusiastically. We kept an email correspondence with occasional phone calls for a couple of years. This summer we met in person. After a half century and in one second we fell into each other's arms and carried on as if only an hour had passed. This has been so healing. Laurie did know me when. Knew my family, my story, my issues. She bore witness. Her memory affirms my own. I am so excited that our connection has been recharged and that we will share the insights and lessons of our wisest and best Queen and Empress years.

"I define connection as the energy
that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance
and strength from the relationship."
Brene Brown
One for All and All for One Once and for All

I was asked to speak to the ministers who are being trained to serve as resident chaplains in the Pastoral Care Department of the Westchester Medical Center. Specifically, they asked me to present the shamanic point of view of team building with an emphasis on creating alliances and community.

Once I got over my surprise and delight at having been invited in the first place, I sat myself down to give some serious thought to the substance of their request. After much rifling through of books and files as well as several periods of deep meditation on the topic at hand, I realized that there is no such thing.

From a shamanic point of view, it is redundant to think of reaching out to build teams, alliances, and communities, as we are already all connected, allied, joined together as one. Just us folks, here, all being born and all just trying to live life as best we can. We are all the same, allied, much more alike than different.

There is no us and them. There is only us. We - all of us who occupy this planet: organic and inorganic; living and not; past, present, and future - we the world.

world in hands

We all come from the Earth and return to Her belly, as ash, as mulch. We are all made of the same substance, same as the sea, the soil, the stars. There are, and ever have been, only so many molecules in existence and no more ever, and all the rest - birth, growth, death, development, change, adaptation, transformation, evolution - is really just about recycling.

We breathe the same air as our cave-dwelling ancestors; inhaling and exhaling, exchanging carbon dioxide and oxygen with our plant relatives untold billions of times over the millennia. And the same holds true for water. We drink the tears of crocodiles and elephants. It rains, it pools, it evaporates, it rains. We drink, we pee. Again and again and again in a grand scale cosmic round robin.

All borders and boundaries and separations are pure illusion. Each time we touch someone, we leave some particles of our skin atoms behind and pick up a parcel of new ones. Thus we merge, literally becoming part of each other. I am you and you are me and we are we.

We are all in this together, inextricably bound on our beautiful blue planet spinning through space. Remember that extraordinary photograph of Earth taken from the moon? We are one family, one community, one world, one living, breathing entity. And the sooner we realize it, the happier, safer and saner we will be.

These are terrible times of artificial division, manipulated resentment and real fear. The real dynamic being played out right now is not about warring religious, economic or nationalistic factions. Not even about war. The struggle is actually between those who believe that the world is defined in terms of opposition - war or peace, right or wrong, black or white, rich or poor, with us or against us - and those who are able to see things in a more holistic, congruent manner.

These are deciding times. It is imperative for those of us who see the big picture to decide, to commit, to make a concerted effort to reach out in ever-expanding circles of affinity and embrace. Now is the time to create healthy, functioning networks in recognition in honor of our mutual state of being and our common fate.

Connect. Convene. Combine. Convent. Coven. Co = together.

Yes, let us please convene. Let us come out of the cocoon closets of our isolated, separate selves and come together. To make connections. To make friends. To make whoopy. To make magic. To make sense. To make art. To make amends. To make time. To make love. To make change. To make peace in our hearts and on the planet.

Let us put ourselves forth as co=operative partners; as inter=dependent members of our families, communities and species; as consciously co=existent inhabitants of our planet and as conscientious co=creators of our combined future.

Letters In Response to the AUGUST 2017 Issue:

I'm getting ready to do a Crowning/70th Birthday Celebration and am using many many of the ideas from your book The Queen of Myself.
I am so excited. I'm also including an installation of The Red Sand Project as a way to step into the Queen - making a difference and finding true purpose. redsandproject.org . I thought I would do the Crowning Ceremony, then go to the site for the Red Sand Installation, then back to the venue for the Birthday Celebration. So excited and inspired by all that you do and share. I love your newsletter and I resonated with so much of your newsletter comments: The idea of giving up hope is what makes us get old. So true. I, too, gave up college and career for marriage, children, etc. - a child born in 1947 - was the way it was. Crone ... ugh .. I love the Queen Archetype .. will hold onto this for a long time. Even though your mother is much older than me, I seem to have many of her concerns that have trickled down through the matriarchy of time apparently. Worry: Debilitated, No Enthusiasm, Aging Body. You truly hold the Queen Archetype and your energy and encouragement re-inspired me also. I do love Empress instead of Crone too - that is BRILLIANT. I just wanted to thank you for all you do! P.S: I have your book, love your book, using your book to create my Queen Crowning Ceremony in late October!!!! Best to you. Hail! Thank you.
- Marilyn, FL

I am with you, Donna MA Madonna! "purify the tainted air that is choking the entire world so that we may be inspired (inspire means "to breathe in") by a fresh spirit of optimism and determined positive action. I do not want to fight fire with fire, but rather surround it with a stronger, saner, sustainable energy of reverence for life."
- Camille, CA

Thank you so much for your August column on aging. Some of us are slow learners and need to get quite old before we have our voice, again, that's me.  I am learning so much more in my 80's than ever before in my life.  I am part of a women's circle and I often tell the younger ones that some of us need more time to learn certain things, so don't be discouraged if you haven't figured some things out yet, keep going. Namaste
- Elayne, NJ

Belated Birthday wishes to you of continued wisdom sharing,of Creative crowd gatherings, of story telling and Disseminating celebrations origins. Always love to read your blog. Very inspiring. Cheers,
- Caterine, RI

Well, please know, dear soul, I, too, am older. Now 72. I do, however, tell one and all, that "I am working on immortality, thus far, the evidence is: I am succeeding." You do the same.

And we are glad to so. It is a joy and a privilege to share in the fortune of another woman. I recently heard Oprah say the saddest thing ever - "The hardest thing about being successful is having someone to be glad for you."

It takes a centered and confident Queen to break that pattern. There are 60 million thrones out there. One for each of us. There is plenty of purpose, passion and power for us all. May we use it well!
