Oolong Ooh-la-la
Meaning "black dragon tea" in Chinese, Oolong is a favorite among tea connoisseurs due to its complex and exotic taste. Its production is also complex and requires skilled artisans well versed in the ancient techniques. First, newly plucked tea leaves are shaken to bruise the edges, allowing varied levels of oxidation across the leaf. Another step in the process is to pan-fry the leaves, sometimes multiple times. Resulting oolong tea can range from 8% to 85% oxidized depending on whether it tends green (less oxidized) or black (more oxidized).
Some of the most famous oolong teas comes from the Wuyi Mountain area (pictured above) and purport to have a great "slimming" effect. In addition to its unique and appealing taste, a number of health benefits have been reported. As an example, Dr. Oz has reported that "Oolong contains polyphenols, which have been shown to help control body fat by improving the metabolism of nutritional fat." Livestrong.com states that oolong tea may also fight tooth decay, improve one's skin and hair, and may even fight allergy symptoms.

Manelle Visits Sri Lanka
President and co-founder of Capital Teas, Manelle Martino, whose great-great-grandfather planted some of the first tea estates in Sri Lanka, is on an official trade mission there this week. Travelling with the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States and representatives of the Sri Lankan and U.S. governments, Manelle has gotten a great sense of the land of her ancestors. As part of her trip, she has been attended Sri Lanka Expo 2012, met with growers from various tea estates, dined with dignitaries, visited Sri Lankan factories, and is of course drinking great tea!
Look for next week's Capital Teas newsletter to recap Manelle's journey.
