Open Cup Starts Region I Qualifiers

Three advance to semifinals

Region1
(9 April) - Four matches took place across the northeast as Region I qualifiers for the Werner Fricker US Open Cup were played this past Sunday.  Lansdowne Bhoys, Maryland Bays and Dulles Sports Aegean Hawks FC advance to the semifinals.  This Sunday, Mass Premier Soccer will take on defending regional champion Icon FC to determine the last semifinalist while we begin the US Amateur Cup quarterfinal round.

The road takes us to the Region I Finals scheduled for 15 June at the Ukrainian American Sport Center in Horsham, Pennsylvania.  The three winners head out in July for the US Adult Soccer National Cup Finals to be played in Salt Lake, Utah.

One semifinal will pit familiar foes, the Maryland Bays and Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC (MDCVA).  The Bays defeated northern rival West Chester United (EPA) 3:1.  Justin McCall gave United the early lead blasting a 25 yard shot after a corner kick clearance.  A few minutes later, Elton Joe drew it even.  Glen Leitch scored the game winner shortly after intermission and the Bays finished off the match as Chris Weaver tapped in a cross from Joe.

The Hawks eliminated Oak Avalon (PAW) 3:1 in the other southern bracket contest.  David Rosenbaum put the Virginia side on top 5 minutes in, which stood for the remainder of the half.  Paul Paradise got Oak Avalon back into the match with a 63rd minute strike.  Scott Larrabee and then Gui Fonseca staged the comeback to put the Hawks through.

In the northern bracket, Lansdowne Bhoys FC (ENY) had too much as it took down Newtown Pride FC (CT) 5:1.  Stephen Roche got the Bhoys to a good start when he converted an early penalty.  Cian McBrien added his brace to give the club a 3:0 halftime lead.  The second half saw Colin Jackson notch one for Newtown and Lansdowne add two more from Dwayne Reid and Sikele Sylvester.

The New England derby between AC Blaugrana (RI) and Mass Premier Soccer was the lone preliminary match in this qualifier with the winner hosting Icon FC (NJ) in the quarterfinal round.  Blaugrana shutout Mass Premier 2:0 with second half goals from Kyle Teixeira and Alencar Ventura.  The match however has been awarded to Mass Premier Soccer as it was determined that Ventura was cup tied.  He had played in the Massachusetts Open Cup qualifiers for Mass United and thus was not eligible to play.  Icon will head up to Framingham to meet up with Mass Premier.

The Region I qualifier started off with 9 state champions from a field of 42 teams.  The semifinals are next month in the quest to reach Salt Lake for the US Adult Soccer National Cup Finals.  At stake is the Werner Fricker US Open Cup and a place in the 2015 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

US Amateur Cup

Next on our list is the the US Amateur Cup with four quarterfinal matches set throughout the region.  Regional titleholder NY Greek American Atlas (ENY) travel to Lynn, MA to take on Mass United FC.  The other northern bracket features Danbury United (CT) hosting Manzanillol Deportivo (NH).  In the south we have Vereinigung Erzgebirge Majors(EPA) visiting Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC (MDCVA) while FC Motown (NJ) invites the Maryland Bays to Montclair, NJ.

These 8 state champions were among 46 sides looking to reach the US Adult Soccer National Cup Finals and a slot in the 2015 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
