Happy Hellebores for Indoors or Out

It is a European tradition to bring Helleborus niger, the Christmas rose, into the house for a few weeks during the holiday season. This year, we are carrying Helleborus niger 'Jacob', a fabulous German hybrid as well as 'Pink Frost', our favorite pink variety.

These CT grown plants have been growing outdoors all during the fall. If you want to plant them in pots on your deck, be sure you do so during a warm spell (like this week) or bring the soil into a warm place so it is defrosted when it's time to plant. Water them well and then water them during the winter if it's sunny and don't allow the soil to dry out.

To bring your Hellebores into the house, you want to acclimate them first. This means to get them used to the warmer, drier air gradually. Bring them into the garage or a shed for a day or two, or perhaps into your mud room or unheated sun porch. Then, once brought into the house, keep them in the coolest part of your home for up to 2-3 weeks. Of course, when company comes, put them on the coffee table or anywhere they can take center stage. They will surely be a topic of conversation.

After the holidays are over, do the reverse. Move them back outside gradually. I store any I bring indoors in my garage or unheated back shed for the winter, right along side my fig trees. I check on them for water every few weeks in the winter, especially as the light gets stronger. Hellebores stored this way can be brought outside in early spring and planted directly in the garden.

 Inspired Gift Giving

Think "outside

the box stores"

With all of the focus lately being on shopping at small businesses and buying locally, I thought you might like a little inspiration for unusual gifts that you could purchase at Natureworks this December.

Flame weeders are the first gift that comes to mind. Besides being the perfect organic weed killer, they can also be used to melt ice patches in the winter time. Flame weeders? Whaat??? These are hand held torches that use a small canister of propane gas. Ignite the switch and voila! You BURN your weeds. I have been using one for years. Think gravel pathways, ground ivy crawling into gardens, you get the idea. As Diane says: "Every woman that walks in here wants one." Perhaps this is not the most romantic gift, but it will melt ice, if not their hearts, when they see how much you care! We have less than a half dozen in stock. Call to reserve one if you can't get in right away.

We carry some very nice bird houses that would make a perfect gift.  This year I did a talk on how to attract bluebirds to your garden. Having a proper bluebird house is really important and the boxes must be set up early. The one we carry is Audubon Society approved, handcrafted, made in the U.S.A., easy to clean (that is important) and only $34.99. Diane and her husband reported seeing bluebirds in their yard this week! Imagine the impact a gift like this could make if the recipient was to attract bluebirds to nest in their yard next spring?

We also carry architectural birdhouses and birdfeeders that look like gazebos and replicas of New England style homes and cottages. They are made of kiln dried hardwood with red cedar or pine shingles for the roof. No pressure treated wood or harmful chemicals are ever used. They hold up exceptionally well in all kinds of weather.

Our garden sickle is also a very popular gift as are many of our other high quality hand tools such as the Hori Hori knife, Cobra weeder, and Felco pruning shears.

Every gardener needs a potting bench. We have 4 or 5 of them scattered around our nursery that are constantly in use. Customers have asked about them so often that we now carry cedar potting benches. These are very high quality and made in America. We also still have some cedar raised beds in stock in our red barn. These are the ones that we plant up each year as edible display gardens and they go together without any tools. Talk about a useful and exciting gift to give your favorite gardener...

Seeds are the promise of spring. We recently restocked our rack with 2014 seeds of all sorts. Gather a collection of heirloom tomatoes, salad greens, herbs, and cutting flowers together to create a thoughtful gift that will be enjoyed for the entire growing season ahead.

If you know someone who doesn't put up a live Christmas tree but misses the intoxicating scent of fresh fir, have we got the answer. This year a friend in the industry introduced me to a fabulous line of soy candles, handmade at a nearby tree farm with freshly harvested fir needles. My staff went crazy for them and we have already reordered. Every one who lifts off the top and smells them buys one. Soy candles burn so nicely and of course, are sustainably made.

Collections of ornaments for newly launched young adults, a classic garden reference book for the new homeowner, pretty pots of bulbs ready to be forced into bloom during the darkest months of the year, a beautiful ceramic birdbath or decorative pot for the deck... We are overflowing with great gifts AND inspiration to make your shopping more relaxing and your gift giving more meaningful. Stop in and let the Merry Elves of Natureworks  help you!

I can't believe how quickly time is flying. We are about to celebrate our 30th Holiday Open House at Natureworks this weekend. Saturday and Sunday Jane will be bringing in her delicious cookies. I watch people try to leave and come back for "one more thing" which includes one more cookie! We will have hot cider, the wine will be flowing, and other yummy treats placed on every available surface. We have been preparing for this special weekend for a long time. Our bins will be stocked with tons of freshly harvested, local greens. Our walls will be overflowing with our naturally designed wreaths and swags. And our fresh cut trees... WOW! Our second shipment just arrived and I immediately spotted "Frank", the tree of my dreams. He is coming home with me fast, before someone else snaps him up. Long and lean, ideal for my small, colonial living room that now houses my parent's piano. Oh, you didn't know that we name our trees? You betcha. That makes picking out a tree a LOT more fun for you and your family.

Have a Fairy Merry December!!!
To add to the celebration at this time of year, we have decided to put all of our miniature and fairy garden accessories on sale at 20% off for a week: Thursday, December 5th through Wednesday, December 11th. Remember, we are open on Thursday nights until 7 if you are looking for an excuse to visit our simply magical store in the evening. We have everything from fences, tables and chairs, arbors, holiday decorations, gnomes, fairies, an absolutely dazzling array of delightful items. The possibilities are endless: make some miniature gardens and give them to friends. Give your favorite young granddaughter or niece a box of accessories with a gift certificate for a play session with you.  Use them to create a miniature evergreen garden on your deck for the winter.

Another exciting addition to our December lineup is a fresh shipment of Hellebores. 'Jacob' is a German hybrid white Christmas Rose and 'Pink Frost' is our most popular pink variety. These are hardy perennials for the shade garden. It is an old European tradition to bring the Christmas rose in the house for a few weeks during the Christmas season. I have been searching the internet and Pinterest and have found endless examples of how they are combined with fresh greens, red winterberry stems, ivy, ferns, and more. My dream is to fill the large clay-like planter outside my home office window with three of these large plants and watch them bloom throughout the winter. Then, in the spring, I will transfer them to my shade garden.  Whether bringing them indoors or planting them outside, read the article on the left for complete care information for Hellebores at this time of year.

Green Friday was a BIG hit with our customers this year! We decided to change the horrible name of Black Friday to green Friday to celebrate all the greens we have at Natureworks right now. Plus, we are one of the greenest garden centers ever as we have been organic for 30+ years. Well, the green
continues this week as truckloads of freshly harvested evergreens are being dipped in WiltPruf and bunched as fast as my staff can work. Did you know that we even dip our roping in WiltPruf? This extra step makes a huge difference, especially if you are using it indoors on your mantle or stair railing. We have really nice white pine roping in convenient 25 foot coils, perfect to hang around the average front door. We will also cut your roping to any length you want. Remember, if you are going to drape it or wrap it around a lamppost, you will need 1/3 more. Let us help you with this traditional hall-decking project.

Some of the interesting greens that we harvest locally are shown above. Combines with our special ribbons and all kinds of cones, pods, and berries, you will see there is truly a difference when you green
 your world the Natureworks way.

Won't you stop in this week and celebrate with me 30 years of festive, fun times at Natureworks. Why, we even just got in real mistletoe! You see, we have everything you need to make this time of year very special. I hope to see you very soon...

*Jane Ketterer is a Natureworks treasure. A few little known facts about Jane that will delight you:

  • She was a June Taylor dancer on the Jackie Gleason show!  When I told my husband he said "I knew there was something special about Jane!"
  • Every year Jane wins up to 50 ribbons at the Guilford Fair for her jams, jellies, and salsas. This year she took home lots of the vegetables from Veggie Island in our parking lot as well as the overflowing abundance from many of our staff gardens. Of course we all enjoy the leftover samples of her goodies.
  • Jane used to be a greenskeeper and landscaper at the Pine Orchard Country Club. That is how I met her. I could see she was an excellent gardener when I designed some gardens for the club and she installed them and took care of them.
