"My art is about the strength and courage associated with the journey through a continuous nightmare that was endured from freedom into slavery. Our strength to survive and the struggle to produce a rich culture of proud people is ever present in my being, my people and my art."
Ulysses Marshall creates paintings, often using mixed media and collage, to express the spirit of the African American journey through slavery and freedom. Drawing from his own personal experiences of growing up in the segregated South in the 1950's and 60's, and serving in the United States Army at age 19 during the Vietnam War, Marshall's artwork is extremely emotive and powerful. Using line, color, shapes and symbols, Marshall creates a visual language that speaks of contemplative sorrow and the ideals of strength, pride, and courage - the traits necessary for survival. Marshall has exhibited widely across the United Sates and his work can be found in the public collections of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture (Baltimore, MD), The National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum (Chicago, IL), Atlanta Life Insurance Company (Atlanta, GA), the King-Tisdel Museum (Savannah, GA), Corcoran Museum of Art, and the Evans-Tibbs Collection of African American Artists (Washington, DC).
