40 under 40: Craft Futures

We're thrilled to open the exhibition 40 under 40: Craft Futures at the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery. This exhibition features forty artists born since 1972, the year that the museum's craft and decorative arts program was established at the Renwick Gallery.

One of the advantages to working with so many living artists is that they're able to come to the museum to personally install their works. Some of the pieces in 40 under 40 are site-specific installations or very intricate, so five of the artists - Nick Dong, Joey Ellis, Olek, Andy Paiko, and Mia Pearlman - have been here in the last month to put the finishing touches on their creations. We took as many photos of the installation process as we could without getting in the artists' way! You can find these photos, as well as pics of the completed installation in our Flickr set.

This exhibition is accompanied by a beautiful catalogue, which includes an essay from the curator, biographies for all forty artists, and some spectacular photos of the artworks (if I sound over-enthusiastic here - trust me, the catalogue deserves the praise!).

The exhibition will be on view at the Renwick Gallery through February 3, 2013.
